Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

TR: Gudauri 21-24 January 2017

Our holiday: Part of a 10 day trip to Georgia followed by 5 days in Mestia/Tetnuldi.
I travelled with my usual 2 snowboarding mates. We are fairly experienced powder-hungry riders who have explored the European Alps extensively and are now looking for new challenges around the world, in addition to our frequent alpine visits.

Website : http://www.gudauri.info

Basics : 2.5 hours north of Tbilisi. Flight from Gatwick via Kiev £240 including ski/snowboard carriage. Taxi from airport was arranged through hotel.

Lift system : 1 new gondola, 1 new detachable 6 seater, 1 detachable quad, the rest fixed grip 3 or 4 seat chairs. Quite busy with Russians from just over the border, including some 5-10 minute queues. The piste map shows plans for a new lift to extend up to the top-left of the area.

The terrain : Big vertical all above the tree line. Mostly of approx red gradient pitch but some much steeper. 60km quoted piste length, easily covered within a day. Loads of off-piste. Lack of trees would mean no shelter during a storm, but we had 4 days of sunshine and great views.

The snow : Disappointing. No significant fresh for over a month. Furthermore the hill faces due south and was sufferering as a result. Pistes very hard packed with some bare patches and no significant powder off-piste.

Off-piste : Masses of off-piste but not really of interest due to the lack of powder. The top lift was closed due to lack of snow which significantly reduced off-piste opportunities.

The resort : The old "village" is a collection of hotels, a gas station and a supermarket strung along the busy main road to Russia. No real resort ambience. There is a new development of apartments at the bottom of the gondola. Neither locations are buzzing resort/apres venues.

Food : A handful of places on the mountain, none particularly special. We had a half board deal so ate each evening in our hotel.

Accommodation : Hotel Gudauri Hut. Nice modern room. Food was buffet style and bland. 5 minute walk to the bottom chair lift, ski back to door.

Costs: CHEAP. Hotel £40pppn half board. £41 for a 4 day lift pass. Beer £1/pint.

Conclusion: Not overly impressed with Gudauri due to the sun baked slopes, lack of trees to offer shelter during any potential snowfall and lack of resort ambience. If you get lucky though just after a dump, could be epic, with big vertical and masses of off-piste.

Real shame you didn't get the snow.

Very different place with powder Smile
