Poster: A snowHead

Hi all,
I was hoping to do my BASI Alpine Level 2 this winter but have just found out the Glenshee course has been cancelled due to lack of numbers and the Cairngorm course is full.
I'm keen to get it done before next season, so have been looking at doing it at Hintertux.
Does anyone have any info/advice about flights, accommodation and transport around the area that would be useful to know to help decide if it's going to be a viable option for me. Also any recommendations would be very much appreciated! I'm on a strict budget, so basically the cheaper end of everything is what I'm looking for, though obviously when you're doing a course such as that, a little quiet and comfort is necessary with little hassle on a daily basis!
Thanks in advance for your advice!
Denry

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Have you also looked at the various partner courses running, seems to be more options? They appear below the "official" BASI Courses. I've done ICE and BASS BASI courses and both have been very good.

@Duplo, I've been the last 2 years to Hintertux for the Telemark week and FIS Telemark World Cup races both held together in November. I usually fly Lufthansa into Munich from Birmingham or Manchester, but they also fly from London of course. Lufthansa include free ski carriage so it generally works out quite competitively. From Munich airport you can get a direct taxi transfer with Four Seasons Travel ( www.tirol-taxi/at ) to Hintertux for about 85 Euros return. I've actually stayed both times in the Hotel Jaeger www.jaeger-tux.at the village of Lanersbach which is just a few km from Hintertux itself and is served by a frequent free skibus service to Hintertux.Hope this helps.

@Duplo, I was going to do my Basi 2 but decided the iasi 2 is a better option due to the shorter course meaning cheaper accommodation and lift pass costs, and less time off work.
Might be worth looking at that if budget is an issue

Thanks everyone for your quick replies.
@Alastair Pink, I take it that for the free buses that run of from the valley you just need to show your lift pass?
@Little Martin, I did look briefly at the IASI scheme before doing my level 1 when I was comparing all the different National Associations. I decided on BASI for a number of reasons. One was being able to do Level 1 & 2 in Scotland, but that hasn't worked out for me this time. A lot of the folk I work with are CSIA and their system seems very good. However I was very impressed with the BASI level 1 course and now I've started with BASI it makes sense to keep going. I do appreciate it's a longer course, therefore more expensive, but that is also one of the things I like about it, the amount of input you get from the trainers.
Has anyone got any experience with Soul Saver accommodation? There's a BASI members deal.
Cheers,
D

@Duplo, Yes the skibus is free, they normally don't even ask for you to show your lift pass, everyone just piles onto the bus with their skis!

Hi Denry, I stayed at Landhaus Gudrun in Lanersbach on both my Hintertux trips. They do an offer at that time of year for BASI candidates, in a shared apartment with others on BASI courses, or you can book one of the studios to yourself for peace in the evenings. The ski bus worked fine during the day from Lanersbach, and I second the Tirol taxi transfer option from Munich. Easyjet also fly there from Edinburgh on suitable dates.

@balernoStu, Thanks very much for that, I've emailed Landhaus Gudrun to ask about rates. It looks like a nice place, and would be great if they could put me in an apartment with other BASI candidates!

Redpoint (BASI partner) will do transfers from Munich & Innsbruck even if you're not staying with them.
Soul Saver is cool, but it's MILES from the glacier - like 45 mins drive every day!
There are loads of cheap apartment options available nearer the glacier during BASI course times. I've stayed at Haus Hohenstein a couple of times (great apartment, cool owner, cheap, but slightly off the bus route). Also stayed at the legendary Gasthaus Klausboden, which is fully-catered and incredibly good value, but you do have to like eating big plates of MEAT.

@Duplo, I like a big plate of meat/chips as much as the next man, but after 2 weeks, my whole body was just screaming for salad! It was relentless.
I got to a point where I was just thinking "It's fuel. Put it in to fuel up your body for tomorrow. Eat mechanically, then go to sleep!"
