Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Transfer from Lyon to Tignes Le Lac

Transfer from Lyon to Tignes Le Lac?

Arriving early monday morning 27/3 and returning early sunday 2/4/17. Best price I've got a private transfer for 2 is 600 euro, going upto 680 for a few companies and extending above 1000 on a couple others.
I'm really just weighing up our options, given the days of the weeks and the times of our flights the bus doesn't appear to be an option - the train could work for the arrival journey but seems time consuming..

I suspect I know the answer and that the price is paying for the convenience and relative speed of a private transfer. Does this price seem reasonable? I'd appreciate any pointers incase I've completely missed the point. I've seen one or two companies that do shared lifts but seem to only run fri-sun.

I'd really appreciate any pointers!

Thanks

@will9124, we generally hire a car. Is that an option?

@needles, Yes it could be actually. I guess I'd need to find out about parking. and then there's the risk of needing snow chains... Puzzled

@will9124, Direct Buses don't run on Mondays. €600 is a reasonable quote (yes it is a lot of money).

Trains are a faff.

Hire car may be better, but factor in the car park charges of €80 or so and €15 each way for tolls.

For that time of year snow chain requirement is unlikely, but you could be unlucky

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@will9124, I always request chains which they charge too much for but better safe than sorry. Also factor in fuel obviously, as well as the parking and tolls. For a small car should be a lot less than a private transfer overall.

I know ! I did manage to pick up our flights for £35 each return and relatively cheap using air bnb so there is a bit of money to spare.. I of course did also have a shop around on the usual companies but couldn't find anything with our very unflexible dates!

I just did for myself and friend.

600 -1000 euros for a transfer from Lyon to Tignes is money for old rope.

Thanks all for the advice. I guess ultimately it comes down to a decision choosing between expense & convenience vs being more economical & taking the plunge and doing the drive yourself !

@will9124, Check out the Tarentaise Transfers Notice Board facebook page. You might be able to latch onto a shared transfer.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

If you want a convenient transfer, don't bother reading this.

One option - park your hire car at Bourg - you never need chains to get to Bourg - even when it has dumped a metre of snow the previous night - then get the transfer coach to Tignes from Bourg train/bus station.

Biggest faff is driving down a few side roads at Bourg to find free roadside parking.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Why? I'd get a train to bourg then a bus. That would probably cost you less than half the price. Or a hire car.

@bernie, Ah but did you pay yourself €11 an hour (the going rate plus holiday pay) for the minimum of 12 hours? Had you paid for an operators licence (Swiss and French)? Did you pay for a drivers medical. Add on the tolls both ways, plus fuel plus wear and tear, plus depreciation. Oh and don't forget airport parking charges, parking in resort. And don't forget insurance for hire and reward and do you have a lock up for all the different child seats that are mandatory. As I said - if its money for old rope come out here and show people how its done!

@turbosmurf, Its normally a bus to Chambery and a change to train to Bourg, or multiple combinations thereof!

I've taken family by train for the last 4 years - train to Bourg isn't the quickest (3hrs +) but not had to change. bus from Bourg is c10Euro each way, train about 30. (This is from the main Lyon train station, not the airport).
