Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Good value goggles required

So I lost my goggles last year. (The year before I lost my helmet...! Expensive business skiing!).

I need some new ones in the next couple of weeks, but I'd had my old ones (Some Anon - can't remember the model) for nearly 10 years, so I'm at a loss as to what to buy.

I'm skint as well which doesn't help. I don't want to buy some cheap tat which I'll have to replace in a year or so, but equally, I don't want to overspend on unnecessary 'features'.

Can anyone recommend a (womens, if that's relevant?) decent price pair of goggles, or, for that matter, is anyone selling any? The only thing I'm keen to have is some that don't fog. I couldn't wear my glasses with my old goggles as they fogged up. I feel like technology might have changed since I bought them, if not, I'll persevere with the contact lenses. rolling eyes

Thanks!

As a fellow speccy-four-eyes, I wear OTG goggles and I've always sworn by Oakleys for reducing fogging problems, but they're normally pretty pricey. Have a look at the range on the RXSport.co.uk website, they specialise in OTG and prescription goggles.

Look out for things like double layered foam to move the goggle lens away from your face a bit and increase airflow across the lens, and features like notches cut out of the foam to accommodate the arms of your glasses. Another 'trick' is to pop down specsavers and get a cheap spare pair of glasses with as small and narrow profile you can find, which will help fit under the goggles you go for and stop your glasses getting pushed back onto your face.

I've always found Bollé good value.

TK Maxx is always worth checking out. This year they have had brands like Alpina, Smith, Spy and Poc.

I got the cheapest Smiths OTG goggles from amazon. They were good, fitted well, did mist up a bit but with the open vent cleared pretty quickly, cost around £40. I'd love to try some Oakleys out but they are a bit too pricey for me at the moment.

@JanieS, Must admit I have never met anyone who got on with OTG goggles without fogging. A small sample size in fairness.

What's the problem with contacts?

Also, you really want to try goggles on with your helmet to ensure they play well together.

Contacts could be great, however for someone like me I have a pronounced astigmatism and also need varifocal lenses to read so I'm pretty much stuck with glasses. As for fogging of my glasses, Smiths goggles (I had a pair previously for around 10 years but the foam is failing now) are pretty good, with only the occasional problem mainly after I have face planted.

Decathlon googles are all fine and do a number of OTG and frame sizes for the smaller face in the same design. I think the basic OTG I saw in store the other week was 9.99 or 10.99 and came in a yellow or brown lens

I recently got some Oakley O2 XL's for £40 odd quid to replace some battered A Frames which I never had fogging problems with. The O2's have a much better field of vision and triple layer foam. Don't think they do a womans version but they do have XM and XS versions for different size faces.

If your after super cheap try Wrapz goggles, I got a pair for £20 on Ebay and are much better than my old oakley's which used to steam up all the time. Used them now on 5 ski trips over the last 2 years.

I ski with glasses inside goggles...I never pay the premium for OTG, and they NEVER mist up.

The trick is to use nail scissors to cut two small channels in the foam (about half a cm each) for the arms of you glasses.

Without the foam pressure on the arms the glasses are completely comfortable.
With the small amount of extra air flow they never mist up...but you still don't get cold.

I just got the Bolle Emperor, Photochrom lens. Fantastic goggle, sperical with great peripheral vision. The lens adjusts from very flat overcast conditions to bright sunlight quickly (not instantly of course). Grade 1 - 3. I hardly wear my Oakley's now, just keep them for very predictable conditions like today, going for the hi-yellow.

Bolle, usually have good rep for the price. I just bought some Summit Xpose goggles. Came with 2 lenses (mid and low light) and they're magnetic so a doddle to change - and a snip st £40. Unfortunately I only got them yesterday so yet to try them out on the slopes, but they're crystal clear compared to my knackered old one's.

Thank you for all the advice.

@under_a_new_name I just don't get along with contacts. I can always feel them in my eyes, they don't move smoothly, they go blurry etc. been in and out of the opticians trying to get them right many times, but it just seems they aren't for me. Which is frustrating!!! I can manage with them for a few hours so I do tend to take them skiing and that's about the only time I wear them.

I plumped for some Anon Helix snow Goggles - I know I should try with my helmet but I can't get to a shop before I go away so I'll try them on when they arrive and can return if necessary. They were £50 on Surfdome and with my student discount, free delivery and Quidco cashback, it works out about £40 so not too bad.

@Richard_Sideways - that's a good idea. I might do that, I do worry about breaking my glasses as I don't have a spare pair.

Of course there is always the option of prescription lenses, but then you end up with goggles, sunglasses and regular glasses which you need to be carrying if you might want a change. Either that or sit in the bar apres ski with your goggles on Toofy Grin
