Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

which size skis to buy for kids

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi there,

I'd like to buy skis and boots for my nearly 6 yo boy.
I'm thinking Decathlon for the ski boots but they don't have good size skis for him.
He's around 110cm, 18kg, 18.5cm mondo.
I assume 90cm skis are good for him as a beginner, but 100cm is ok as well?
He grows quite slowly, but I wonder if 90cm is too short for him next year...
We will probably ski for a couple of weeks each season.
He's got a little brother, so we can use them again later on though.

Thank you Happy

I'd go for the 100cm length. My son had 100cm at age five, 109 at six, 119 at seven, and now 129 this year age eight. He's reasonably tall and strong

Go for something between chin and nose length, and don't worry about losing money. Kids kit sells well on here and eBay

@Lux1, yes probably 90cm for a beginner that height. A lot of people will tell you just to rent but if you ski more than a week a season buying can make sense. Don't be tempted to size up too much in the hope that he will grow into it, as a beginner the best way to allow him to enjoy it and progress is to get equipment that fits at the time you go. Also think about some learn to ski sessions in a dome or dry slope-this can make a big difference.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Look into Full Tilt or Roches adjustable boots. Both are excellent, although the Full Tilt's are probably a bit better.

Agreed on the adjustable boots, Roxanne chameleons are good as well. My daughter used a pair for 3 years

Thank you for the suggestions! Decathlon has started to sell the adjustable boots too. I'm not sure if they are good though.

@Lux1, my daughter (now 12) has used the Roxa adjustable boots for the last couple of years and is very happy with them. The only slight issue is that the tongue of the shell can get caught outside the shell, especially by the clips, when putting them on. Not a problem for her, but might make it harder for a younger child to be independent getting their boots on.

Decathlon own brand ski kit is always good in my experience and with boots I think they are a rebadged big name

Thanks again all. My son used the decathlon boots today. They seem ok though he was a bit poorly and finished quite early. We'll look for the brands you all recommended next time Happy

People here are so helpful and kind. Thanks so much!
