Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Anyone got any experience of the Salomon MTN boots for multi day touring ?

Yes - have both pairs - blue stiffer ones (new this season) and white light softer ones (season and a half in).

White Explore are obviously better on the up but not as good for the descent.

I've been using the blue ones all season for both touring as well as for piste skiing. One things for sure with the uber cold temps my feet have not been cold in them unlike my alpine boots.

I know of two guides who use the blue ones.

I'm doing a big hut to hut in early March and will wait to see what snow is like before deciding on what boots n'skis.

@Weathercam, does walk mode give a good range of movement for uphill?

Any niggles at all?

On one foot (and I don't know why must be my legs as the same for both pairs) I climb up with all the top straps / buckles undone in walk mode.

Today was the first time this season that I used the white explorers as I knew I was in for a long valley hike in and out - and with temps a balmy 3-4 degrees and a feckin tough climb when it did come, bingo blister on one foot, now was that the boot or sweaty feet ?

Downhill could not really give a fair assessment compared to the blue MTN lab boots as I had to put one dog in my pack as snow was pretty deep for her, and that sort of curtailed my speed etc plus even with her in the pack I had to wait for the other one who was finding the going tough as well rolling eyes

@ChrisKernow, the MTN LAB (blue) is by far and away the best touring boot I have had on my feet (and I have had a few...) - skied/toured in them all last winter and in the spring used for 2 weeks of touring in Lofoten and 4 weeks on Baffin Island touring/mountaineering every day.

The Explore (white) is way to soft for me, but might be alright depending on you/skier type/skis etc.

Got a few customers that have this seasons blue Mtn Lab. A couple of them are using them with Kingpins & the heel bindings have made a right mess of the heel lugs on the boot which seems to be very soft. Wouldn't be a problem with tech heels though.

@offpisteskiing, narrow skis, fast technical ascents keeping up with the locals they (Explorers) work great, and as ever a compromise on the descent.

Bought the Blues to make life easier........ rolling eyes

OH was up at the SIGB trade show at Telford past week, and new Atomic touring boot voted best product, and Scott have a new touring boot with walk mechanism on the front.

Was Googling the new Scott boot and as ever WildSnow have a very detailed report on it but not what really matters a review on it when actually using it to ski.

Might be in a position later in the season to test some.
