Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Trashed my knee (ruptured quad tendon/broken ankle)

Finally home with a carrier bag full of drugs! (well at dads house as heating and cooking at home relies on me getting into the cellar and bringing up scuttles of coal to feed to Rayburn). Ankle is in a cast as by Monday the bones were still aligned a chat between me, the surgeon and the biomechanics bods it was decided that would give a more solid anchor for the brace locking my knee straight (basically means the two lower straps can be good and tight with no need to worry about cutting off circulation in my leg!). Also had the advantage of not needing another anaesthetic as it took two goes on Friday for the knee op. They first (at my request) tried a spinal block but that didn't take so I told them to knock me out and be done with it! A pity really as would have been interesting to see what they were doing!

Oh Gosh @davkt
Bloody knees and ankles,
I'm fretting over mine now Sad
I bust my ankle badly motorbiking 50 years ago, it has given me so much grief over the years and its getting worse.

Knee problems for me are a bit more recent, I felt I just had to go skiing last week.
I was careful to look after my newly recovering knee (I dont know exactly whats wrong with it)
But a fall right at the end of the knee has upset both knees ... they just feel so tired, they don't want to go upstairs or get out of a chair.
And the ankle is predicting some wet weather is on the way.

I do hope you can recover quickly and get back to searing down the mountains again next season.

@davkt,

Sorry to hear of your injury and quads rupture.

Try to establish if you can get the knee moving from day one. I find that that is much better than a long period in plaster/immoblisation after surgery.
Early movement reduces tendency for excessive scar in the knee. It also gets the rehab under way as early as possible. I'm afraid think it will be 6 to 8 months before sport, in most cases.

Docs at Derby say they assess things at 10 days and if all is well put some limited flex in the knee brace so sounds much closer to your ideas, probably help that the doc who did the op is another sailor so understands the demands a racing yacht puts on things

Yup, got to see the surgery incision for the first time on Friday when I went to see the nurse at my GPs to have the dressing changed and wound checked, it is going to be a big impressive scar! Am hoping when I go to the hospital on Thursday the surgeon will give me 10 degrees or so of flex in the brace so even though I'll still be unable to put any weight on it thanks to the ankle I can at least start moving it. And have just managed to hop round to the Coop to get some fire lighters, all of half a km and around 20m of uphill, pretty pathetic in the big scheme of things but I'm rather pleased with myself, longest I had managed before was maybe a couple of hundred m getting out of the hospital!

Well off to hospital tomorrow morning to have the cast replaced. My foot and I guess lower leg are now back to something approaching their normal size and the cast feels like a ski boot that is about 3 sizes too big! And am pretty sure if my foot and leg is slopping around in there that means the bones can slop about as well!

Slight change of plan, still the same cast but now waiting for a slot in the surgical lists to fix my ankle as the bones have moved out of position. On the plus side the 20 or so staples holding the big cut in my knee together were taken out so that is a little less annoying!

No slots today but the senior trauma nurse said unless there is something like a major RTA hogging the operating theatres it will be done tomorrow. Just frustrating now as I'm under doctor's orders to move as little as possible, at least the Freeride World Tour was live streamed this morning and Eurosport are showing snowboarding now after they done with Nordic for the day! Though I guess this now resets the 6 week counter on how long till I can start putting any weight on my trashed leg.

Still no surgery slot and today's fun and games is one of the locks one side of the knee brace has failed so isn't holding my leg straight. Still given all skiing and hiking gear round the house think I'd have had to return my REC oudoors first aid certificate if I couldn't re-immobilise it. Turns out one of the kids grown out ski poles is just the perfect length to strap to my leg to stop it bending.

Or any stone cold sober London Commuter! In fact a few too many would have made it less annoying as it would be self inflicted. Not a ski injury, a ruin the ski season injury though. Ankle is now steel reinforced and am chatting to Jonathan Bell to arrange to go see him to make sure I can ski again by next winter. Over on epicski there is a big thread on bust quads running to over 365 pages of posts and several hundred different cases. Pretty much every one is caused by a little slip or trip going about day to day life

@davkt, happy birthday!

Only one of my three knee surgeries were required after skiing injury, one was just it collapsing while hockey training and the other from kneeling down painting the side of the elevated decking in our garden!

Really hope they operate soon, what is the risk if they delay it too long?

Thanks Hurtle.
A bit more entertainment with all this today, ankle is now in a split plaster at the moment with the bottom half of the knee brass strapped to that so plaster and brace are moving all over the place. Not ideal when both knee and ankle are meant to be immobilised. Not sure the trauma nurses were taking it seriously when I told them this but the physios listened to what I said, looked horrified and went to find a casts and splints specialist

Nicky,
The risk as explained by the orthopedics doc I saw when I first ended in A&E is the snapped tendon will continue to contract away from the bone it is supposed to be attached to, once you get to somewhere around the week to 10 days it reaches a point where it has gone too far to easily reattach. In the end the knee surgery was done 72 hours after the accident, ankle was 15 days later as they tried a cast first (due to it being rather more swollen than they'd have ideally liked to operate on and them not wanting to give me another anaesthetic so soon after taking 2 goes for the knee op if they really didn't have to) but that didn't keep the bones in place.

Seems like most of the repairs using these plates have a screw or two off on its own

Managed just over a mile of crutch hopping around the small town /big village I live in today and was happy to find that the 60 deg flex means I can now fit my leg under the table of my favourite (and rather very tiny, cramped and quirky) coffee shop! I'm also becoming a bit of expert on exactly how much (or little) grip the various road, pavement and footpath surfaces offer to crutches, tarmac good, cobble stones OK but don't put crutch on the cracks, wet sandstone paving slabs avoid!

OK, 10 weeks post knee surgery and 8 weeks on from the ankle op and things are getting better. Have been managing a mile or two of crutch hopping most days and it has been doing wonders for upper body strength! The ankle cast came off 2 weeks ago so the last fortnight has been touch weight bearing and as of yesterday I can be full weight bearing on my ankle and have 120º of movement in my knee brace. I'm also finally allowed to take the brace off at night and when I am sitting around. And the big win of yesterday is I made it across my living room without crutches, slow and unsteady and never out of reach of something to grab on to if it went wrong but progress! I do now have one horribly atrophied but slightly mobile leg am off to see @Jonathan Bell soon to make plans for getting it back to fitness and all working again!

It does have a purpose! I had what the the docs call a butterfly fracture, actually 2 fracture lines meeting at an obtuse angle creating a triangular fragment of bone. The lone screw is to pin the triangle to main bit of bone and the other screws and plate to hold the 3 bits in line while they heal.

Well last season didn't happen, getting fitness back takes a bit longer when you get into your 50s! But I managed to cycle a fair bit over the summer, including the Eroica Britannia and now its time to get back on snow! Just tried my boots on for the first time in 2 years and think it is safe to to say my right ankle is a rather different shape to what it was pre accident rolling eyes
I guess it really time for me to go talk to the quack about taking the plate out of my ankle, particularly as a couple of those screws seem to be coming loose! If I can get it done quick hopefully could be ready for some Easter Skiing, if not time to get a new liner that is ankled shaped so I can get some skiing this year then get the plate sorted in the spring.
