Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Garmin Vivoactive HR ski app

Hi,

I have one and I was wondering how good the built in app was for tracking skiing? If so did it work well, how was the battery life, could you overlay it on a piste map? Does the auto detect for lifts work?

thanks

@pieman666, I have the 1.0 Vivoactive (no inbuilt HRM). IIRC I used it last year - and it was fine, but... didn't autodetect lifts for the purposes of averages, distance, etc. hence a bit pants if that's your thang. Hopefully the developer's got it sorted by now.
Battery life - no difference to a day's UK bike riding / walking with GPS on. Ie. you'll be best to charge each evening.
Chose to use the watch over the phone apps (e.g ski tracks: other apps are available) though - rather have that charged for emergencies.

Overlay on maps was good.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

thanks @Arctic Roll

Ski apps hammer the battery on my phone so it seems like this will work well. As you say hopefully they have sorted the pause for lifts bit out.

I will post after my holiday.

Have been using one for just over a month and the ski app works well. Battery life was comfortable for the day but wouldn't be big enough for 2 days so charging is needed every day.

The auto detect for lifts has been correct on virtually every lift and it also detects when you are stationary so be prepared for plenty of vibrations! Was very interesting to see how little time is actually spent skiing.

I have been running Ski Tracks as well and the data is similar without any noticeable differences.

Not sure if you could overlay it on a piste map as I haven't been able to find a piste map in the right format but you can add to Strava which gives an idea.

@ernie, that good news about the lifts - I'm out again at the end of Feb, so will be giving it a go. You're right about piste maps, but I've always overlaid on Strava or Google, and since we tend to ski, bike and walk the same area, I know the terrain pretty well so am happy with that option.
But if you find a piste map version, do share!
