The GMB trades union has "thrown its full weight behind Cardiff Council’s official bid" [it says here] for a regional casino to form part of the Cardiff International Sports Village - key to Cardiff's bid to be a "UK core city for the 2012 Olympics".
The Cardiff International Sports Village would incorporate a "snow mountain" and ice sports ... as well as Olympic standard 50m swimming pool. This is stated to be a £700 million project, with a projected generation of 4500 jobs.

Sounds fantastic! I've heard there is some opposition against the casino, but i'm sure that won't cause a problem.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Wouldn't bet my savings on Cardiff Council coming up with the money. The whole Cardiff Bay project has been a bit of a long haul. At least the Assembly building arrived on time and (kind of) on budget. I'm waiting for the next ice age to hit South Wales, would be some nice blue cruisers. BTW did anyone used to ski in Merthyr Tydfil before the mysterious fire in the ski lodge?

Yes I did, a few times when visiting my parents. It was a good length slope, but a bit bleak in bad weather. They only managed to run the snow canons once from what I can remember, and that was before the slope officially opened. The whole place seemed very badly run when I visited, and didn't inspire me to make return visits. I wasn't surprised when they had a "mysterious fire". There never seemed to be enough visitors there to make it a viable enterprise when all the grant/regeneration money ran out.
