Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Poster: A snowHead
I want to be in the snow for my birthday so am looking for Friday 27th Jan to Monday 30th (3 nights).
It is for my husband & two children 4 & 7
I would like the following:
Snow sure
sledge run
Pretty if possible

I really fancied Wengen as I love the train and the whole beauty of the place but is working out very expensive. Any other ideas?

@SAM@WORK, she said pretty if possible... Let's just say Avoriaz splits opinions... (I actually think it is ok)

@christine28, which airport(s) would you fly from?

If you can fly to either Salzburg, Innsbruck or even Munich, most Austrian resorts fit your description. Places like Zell am See, Saalbach, any Ski Welt resort, St Anton or Lech would do nicely (but there are many others). They are all close to airports maximising your 3 days, pretty and have accommodation which will cater for short breaks. Snow sure would be the only question mark but for 27th Jan, I think you would be OK with this as well. Once you post your preferred airport I can be more specific.

@EdYarker, minimising transfer is all very well but helps not a lot if flights are at crap times...

Innsbruck and Salzburg do not have great weekend timetables...at least not when I last looked.

Almost invariably Geneva is best bet for convenience...

Areas close (1 to 1.5 hrs) to Zurich are also worth a look - e.g. Laax-Flims-Falera.

@under a new name, Yes Geneva has more flights for sure, but it does depend on where the OP is flying from. I have done some great 3 day trips to Austria flying in/ out of Munich and the other way via Salzburg/ Innsbruck.

If you want to go sledging, I doubt it gets much better than this:

A great toboggan run. 6km served by an 8 man gondola. Yes, it's FOUR MILES LONG. You don't have to do it at night, it's open all day too. You only get off to cross a road and walk up 1 short hump. Otherwise, it's just downhill for miles. You'll definitely want to do it again. Stay with our lovely flangesax family in Radstadt at the bottom.

Great views from the terrace.

Under an hour of simple motorway driving from Salzburg airport. Great skiing but the toboggan run is Shocked Shocked Shocked Something you don't forget. Great pool in Altenmarkt too.

Have you thought about La Clusaz in France?

Really pretty resort, 3 different sledging runs suitable for all ages, reasonably snow sure and only a 1-hour transfer so perfect for a short ski break.

Plenty of other activities there too such as dog sledging, pony sledging, an aqua park and an ice circuit for children aged between 2-10 years.

Vote for Austria. Zell Am See, a lovely little town, is very close to Salzburg and Kaprun (next door) is on a glacier & therefore snowsure. You may well find cheaper flights to Munich where you can hire a car & it's still an easy drive for a weekend (or taxi transfers for a bit more)

Key for short weekends are suitable flight times (outbound either night before or very early morning) and return late evening, otherwise travel time eats too much into the holiday. Then a short easy transfer (hiring a car or a private taxi transfer is quickest). For your dates, hotels should be easy.

These days there are less flight options than there used to be, depending on where you are setting off from. Geneva or Zurich generally have most flights, and Munich is pretty good too. Innsbruck has early morning flight out from LGW with EasyJet, but latest return is 15.20, so eats badly into the last day.

Skyscanner is the best site I have found for identifying suitable flights, with its useful time filters. J2Ski has a handy tool for identifying resorts closest to various airports

Example: Lufthansa to Munich out 0635, arr 0920 on 27th, return 19.15 arr 20.20 £177pp. Lots of resorts around 1.5-2 hours drive from Munich airport: https://www.j2ski.com/ski_resorts/Airports/Munich.html Examples, are Ski Welt (Ellmau etc), Alpbach, Kitzbuhel.... You could be on the slopes at lunchtime on Friday and get a whole day on the Monday.
