Poster: A snowHead

hi all,
We always go to Italy and love it (would love to go to Cervinia but expensive for our pockets), but it seems that conditions are "better" in Austria (considering budget too ~ max £350/£370 each Half board, as we need to hire equipment + lessons).
What would you guys recommend to a couple of intermediates who like Blue and Reds, nothing very steep or challenging. We normally take lessons. No Apre. Basic accomodation with nice hot shower and bed. Preferably with meals included (so no need for cooking).
Niederau looks good value for money, but seems to have a handful of pistes really and lots of drag lifts (I know good when the wind shuts the cable/chairs).
What would you guys recommend us for Austria
cheers, ric

Hi
Dozens upon dozens of possibilities:
Wagrain/Flachau (easily linked with Kleinarl, Flachauwinkel, Zauchensee)
Schladming
Gasteinertal
Zillertal
Saalbach - Hinterglemm
and so on...
I'd take a look at Wagrain. Incredibly easy to reach from Salzburg; more grown up apres scene (so youre not paying a premium for a vibe you dont really want); fab pistes and lift system; plenty of good value restaurants and accomodation etc... As i live in Austria, i never saw the sense in going to the same place twice with so many possibilities nearby, but Wagrain is the only place I've been to twice in a season! Really fantastic resort!

Can't fault what @shiva_71, has suggested. I'd probably add the Hochkönig to that list too (Maria Alm, Dienten, Muhlbach).

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@redbaron51, stay in Radstadt with the lovely snowheads who run www.austrian-adventures.com
Radstadt is really central for Salzburg Sportwelt, Schladming and the whole Ski Amadé area. The snow is perfect right now and you'll have a fabulous time. Easy transfer from Salzburg, either a taxi (€50 return), train (€29 return) or public bus (€10 return), or rent a car and make the most of the whole area.

As above. Plus some less popular with Brits such as Nassfeld.
And you really ought to look at http://www.austrian-adventures.com/ which is VERY SnowHead friendly |
Almost like a permanent mini Bash. I've spent many a happy week staying there in Radstadt and over the next month or two there are a lot of snowHeads in the area to hook up with.

@redbaron51,
You might find the prices of lessons and lift passes a little cheaper than Cervinia.
e.g. the 6 day pass inc. Zermatt is 310e per person in Cervinia
The All star pass inc. Kitzbuhel, Skiwelt and many others is 265e per person.
Also prices for food and drink on the mountain may be a bit cheaper too.
So you might be able to up your accommodation budget a little!

When are you looking to go?
If in the next week or so then ignore what follows, but if it snows then Slovenia is worth a try. Chalet Reka Hisa near Bled would fit your budget and requirements. The accommodation is better than basic but not flash, but spotless, half board food is top notch (owner is trained chef) and the skiing is nearly all cruisey blue and reds. Owner ferrries you in a mini bus to different resorts every day so very flexible, can arrange guides and lessons too which are very cost effective.
I'm returning there in 2 weeks and praying for snow at the moment, although there is enough cannon snow most of the resorts to get a decent ski in anyway.

@redbaron51, There are some fabulous deals out there for those weeks especially to places like Soll and Niederau. I looked at http://www.holidaydiscountcentre.co.uk/ - £229 half board inc flights to Niederau for example. And Bansko Bulgaria is half that!

@redbaron51, at the risk of repeating what has already been said, I have had many a lovely week staying with our own flangesax ( info at www.austrian-adventures.com ). I go back time and time again, on my own, and with my family. The various ski areas offer everything from nursery slopes to proper off piste. I don't know what dates you have mind, but there is the small matter of the Nightrace in Schladming on the 23rd which is about the most insane experience you're likely to encounter with your clothes on. Contact flangesax to see what they have to offer ???

@redbaron51,
If you're going next week then definitely Austria or Bulgaria are the best options for recent snow. If you go for TO package then Soll (SkiWelt) or Mayrhofen (Zillertal Valley) are probably the best options for a larger ski area at a lower price. Other cheap options in Austria with less skiing include Niederau (bus access to Alpbach area), St Johann (with access by train to Kitzbuhel and buses to other areas), or Rauris. In Bulgaria maybe Bansko the best option for you. Alternatively you could consider places like Sestriere that should still have good cover or somewhere like the Val di Fassa with access to the Sella Ronda (artificial snow only) at a good price. If you go DYI then check out Schladming, Loser/Tauplitz, and Wurzeralm/Hinterstoder which have had the best of the most recent falls in Eastern Alps.
