Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Buying my own gear

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I had a 3hr trial snowboarding lesson at the snow dome the other day and did alright and now I'm thinking of buying a snowboard as Ive seen the following for only 150€, it is going to cost me 86-120€ to rent for a week in Andorra

Burton Bullet 160cm
bindings
boots
jacket and trousers
and bag

I am about 180cm tall and 80-82kg, the current owner is 188cms

When I was at the snow dome I was on a Burton 155cm, (but the girl didnt ask my height or weight though) and I felt I did well on that, I was one of the the two best at the end of the lesson.
What difference will the extra 5cms make, or should I have had a longer board anyway?

I have googled this and 160cm seems about right for my height but then another website said you need to take more things into consideration than height

Thanks

I suspect 5cm either way wont make much of a difference, things like the base profile (camber / rocker / whatever weird mix they're currently saying is the ultimate) will probably be more noticeable.

Ultimately (imho) if you buy any board you'll become one with it sooner or later, and you'll be better placed to know exactly what you want in a couple years.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

After more googling it seem the board length is determined by weight and width by boot size.

From general websites it seems I am in the right weight for this length board, but I cant find anything specific on the Burton website, I did find these details for a Burton Bullet Wide
[154 cm] 120 - 170 lb,
[157 cm] 130 - 180 lb,
[160 cm] 145 - 195 lb,
[164 cm] 155 - 205 lb

But I cant find details for the normal one

I can't tell you what size board you need, but...

If any two or three items on that list are reasonable quality and fit, then it's a good deal for that sort of money! Even if you chuck/sell on the board after a few days and the boots aren't quite right, then reasonable bindings and the bag should be able to fit straight to a new board in the future. Obviously depends a lot on quality of kit, but if it suits you, give it a try. If even one bit of that kit survives to your 2nd holiday, then you'll have saved money compared to hiring.

Any idea what age or spec the rest of the kit is?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

There was no normal one. The Bullet was a wide snowboard. What size are your feet? The length is ok, maybe a touch longer than optimal but fine. Having a wide board when you don't need one is not a great idea when learning.

Are the boots the right size, because if not you're going to have to hire or buy new boots?

The boots are 44-46 in Europe size which are about right for my feet, I usually take around a 45 for trainers but I often have to get a size bigger than I need because I have wide feet, but obviously need to try them on to be sure

For the simple answer, usual rules of buying apply...:

If it's the right product(s) for your needs at a decent price then buy if you can afford.

If it doesn't fit your need, don't buy it however great a deal it is.

Very Happy

@fredbob, As above, if it's the right kit at the right size and to the right price, then buy it. Personally I wouldn't do second hand clothes, but that's more personal.

I'm not sure second hand boots are a good idea - liners pack out and mould to the shape of the users foot, so unless you find your foot-double they're probably going to be uncomfortable.........

Rogg - very good point I remember reading something about them moulding to your feet awhile ago.

I have a pic of the bottom of the board and I think there might be some damage to it, bu I'm not totally sure, I'll try and upload a pic to see what people say

Thanks everyone so far

I suspect whatever board you buy will end up like that after a couple weeks anyways.

Mine's worse, patched it up with p-tex and it works great.
