Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski resort Italy - 2nd week in Jan17

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
hi all,

as usual leaving for the very last minute, therefore it will probably be a holiday booked with a TO....we try to find Half-board so do not have to cook as it seems that works out cheaper than eat out every night (risotto, pasta, lasagna, etc)....We are not bothered about luxury accommodation as long as it has a good hot shower, room does not smell cigarette, nice bed....

we tend to travel to Italy (usually 2nd week Jan, i.e., 14/15 - 21/22 Jan). 2x intermediates who like to ski wide runs...we do not care about trying very steep terrain, black slopes, etc. Happy with Reds and blues. We will book ski school anyway....

I've been looking at Madonna di Campiglio, Cervinia and Bardonecchia.

Bardonecchia seems to be the best value for money, however lots of drag lifts. It also seems that it is divided into 3 non-linked areas.

Madonna looks really nice, in fact nicer than Cervinia by the looks of it. Both seem to have good number of runs.

I would appreciate if you guys could throw some comments, experiences, etc

We did Monterosa region (Champoluc, Gressonay,Alanya) two years ago in January. Highly recommended for intermediates. Great skiing, excellent friendly cheap mountain restaurants. Go for it. Very Happy

I would imagine you will get the cheapest deals in Sauze and Bardonecchia. I've been to both and enjoyed them. Bardonecchia (Hoterl Ca Fiore recommended) has 3 areas but 2 are linked and is an enjoyable tree lined affair:- admittedly there were still 1 or 2 drags. The non lift linked arrear is good for a day or two and benefits from a free shuttle. I think the lift pass also gives you a day in the Milky Way 20 minutes down the road. Sauze has 4x more linked area if you include the Milky Way. It also appears to have had good early season snow, which is a rarity this year. prices are very reasonable here as well. Both these resorts get very crowded at weeknds but otherwise slopes quite empty.

Cervina gives you the option of skiing into Zermatt, which is a great experience and the Matterhorn scenery is amazing, but you will pay a bit extra for the privilege (although I do sometimes see some good deals there). I have yet to try MdiC, but it's on my list and looks good. In short they are all good places IMHO, all suited to intermediates, so go with whichever has the best hotel for least/ best conditions around the time of booking. Good luck.

@lambert, thanks....trying to find a TO which covers this area

@EdYarker, I skied in Sauze Mar/15 and after lunch was a slush affair....Last day my instructor took us to France, lots of chairs, cabins, etc....Are you saying that there are not many drags in Bardo??? It looks like a good resort for Beginners/Intermediates.

We went to Pila last season and was fantastic (it is also an option).

Ski lessons in MdiC are quite expensive Shocked

Which TO would you guys recommend? I used Crystal many times and have always been happy. Neilson once and also good....

@redbaron51, Crystal cover Champoluc and Gressonay. I think Inghams also go there. Also a couple of specialist chalet companies. Just google the names
Chairs are good, no drags, also a couple of cables if I remember. And importantly not very busy in January
Lots of varied skiing across the three valleys (Champoluc, Gressonay and Alagna)

Well as Bardonecchia and Sauze are looking good from a snow point of view at the mo that's where I'd be booking. I did Sauze last year and even though there were only about 5 runs open I still enjoyed it. I think with decent conditions it would be great.

I'd love to do a week in Maddona but its hard to find single accommodation. I've done a couple of days there from Passo Tonale and loved it. Amazing scenery and really nice wide tree lined runs.

@under a new name, We usually choose the cheapest hotels, and to DIY the costs of transfers, half-board accommodation and flights (last-minute) end up much more expensive than if going via TO...

I've had a day in Madonna di Campiglio and I have to say it is a nice resort to ski at and seems great considering what you're after. Not been to the other two though.
