Salt Lake City, Utah, lies below some of the finest skiing in America ... and can suffer serious smog pollution in mid-winter. The pollution is caused by temperature inversions - the phenomenon of cold air being locked below warm air. Salt Lake City suffers an average of 12 'heavy inversion days' from November through February, with January and February typically being the worst months
Local ski resorts have seen the opportunity of promoting clear air, and are running an 'Inversion Diversion' campaign to encourage those living in the valleys to get up to the mountains.

One thought that arises is that thousands of city motorists jumping into gas guzzlers to climb mountain roads to escape the smog probably generates more pollution for those suffering below.
Would it be fair to put that point to the promoters of this scheme?

A lot of them use the UTA bus service, which for around $3 will take you from the city to Alta/Snowbird or Brigthon/Solitude.

Is that all? We're on about our 60th consecutive day of temperature inversion induced smog. Still nearby Grenoble is one of the most polluted cities in France - no wonder they don't produce many world class skiers.

That's terrible. When I last went through Turin (which would probably like nice clear skies for the TV cameras in a few weeks time) the smog was very evident.
Clearly [sic] humankind needs to rethink its approach to using the atmosphere as a giant dustbin - not to mention the oceans.
