Poster: A snowHead

The usual ski hire websites all seem to be considerably more expensive for ski hire in Switzerland vs France. Is this to be expected? lift passes seem comparable. Any tips for getting best prices for switzerland ? Done France/Italy numerous times and never previously struggled to get a good price. Family of 6

Engelberg won't be cheap - CHF and its not a particularly cheap place anyway. Can't actually remember many rental shops other than along the road to the Titlis lifts and those include a Stockli only place. Lots of visiting Zurichers/Lucerners etc at weekends who bring their own kit probably drives down economies of scale too.

There are three Intersport rental businesses: Titlis in Klosterstrasse; Titlis Rent at the valley station of the main gondola (most convenient and good quality, but always busy!); and Cristillina in Dorfstrasse.
4 Seasons in Dorfstrasse is a Skiset agent and, as mentioned, there's a Stockli rental shop in Gerschniweg on the way to main Titlis lift.
There are two branches of Swiss rentasport Quattro - one in Engelbergstrasse, the other in Dorfstrasse.
There may be others but I can't recall them at the moment. None of them will be cheap (nothing in Switzerland is!). I'm taking my own skis...

If you have time to spare and a car, a lot of the big sports shops do season rentals but they will also rent per day if they have some stuff not rented to the season renters. I had some family come over last year and we rented this way and was a way cheaper. If i remember you will pay maybe 80-100CHF per day or boots poles skis depending on your lever. Mad prices Ted

thanks for info. have priced up intermediate level skis and boots for everyone (6 people) for 6 days for £865, which is not that much more than some french resorts im thinking given exchange rate etc.
Next question then: eating out every night or paying for dinner in the hotel (current B&B only) at £115 per person for 6 nights.......

A fair number of restaurants and hotel dining rooms; unfortunately, I'm hard-pressed to recall many of their names. I remember a cheap and cheerful dinner one evening in the Yucatan but the other restaurants blend into one another (and I've been there several times!)
There's a comprehensive list here: http://www.engelberg.ch/en/accommodation-dining/gastronomy/

thanks all, hired through skipasses.com. last question, what ski region is engelberg in? It is called central, but there does not seem to be a collective term for the resorts( ie there seems to be no thread on the forum about conditions etc)

Perhaps you should check out the skip at the back of the Stokli Factory .. Its only a few meters from the Titlis lift.
You never know!

Ooops I think I got that wrong .. I thought it was the Stokli factory when I was there in 2012 .. perhaps it was just a ski hire shop

@risb98, erm, Engelberg! Titlis if you prefer. It's rather contained in and of itself. There has long been a project on the drawing board to connect Engelberg to Meiringen-Hasliberg and to Melchsee-Frutt but 13 years on and it seems no closer to becoming a reality.

@risb98, www.engelberg.ch is your first stop for webcams, street maps, piste maps etc. Engelberg is in central Switzerland and there are two very separate ski areas. The main area is Titlis with access to extensive off-piste and a satisfactory but a little disjointed area of pistes (mainly red). The second area is Brunni which is at lower altitude and south facing so has a shorter season. There is a massive nursery area at the foot of the Brunnibahn gondola called Kostermatte which has another shortish season. There are lifts at Bannalp down the valley towards Lucerne but they mainly give access to touring terrain.

thanks. Been on the website (which is pretty good). What I was trying to find out: is there in an ongoing thread on this forum that includes engelberg with regards to current conditions. It is described a snowsure and good early season.

@risb98, I live and work here and ski every day so any questions let me know. New Irish Bar has opened in town with really good food and atmosphere, its just behind the main titles rent, In terms of food, Schweizerhaus just outside town in amazing, approx 25 minute walk form the monastery, The ok restaurant at the bottom of Brunni does good burger nights on Fridays. In the village, Yucatan, Alpen Club are the best options.
Current conditions are hard packed and fast on piste! Snow cannons are on every day
