Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski lessons in Meribel Mottaret

 Poster: A snowHead

Any recommendations for ski lessons in Mottaret? 1 weeks previous ski experience. Options in Mottaret seem quite limited but not sure how long it would take to get down to Meribel for relative newbies. Any thoughts?

@New to ski, http://www.skinewgen.com/about-new-generation/meet-the-team/

They are highly regarded and should be able to sort you out from Mottaret.

Also, the run down to the ski school meeting point in Meribel is very gentle- I would say even timid timid newbies would manage it comfortably. Getting back to Mottaret will be more interesting though, so maybe more sensible to get lessons there.

With one week skiing it should not be a problem to go down to Meribel Chaudanne (main meeting point) on piste - it is a very easy run. Just need to use some time.
Getting back is a bit more difficult - but there is a bus as well if needed.

Seconds for New Generation. My wife and I learnt with them some a few years back and they were great. Still see the same instructors year after year and they always stop for a quick chat.

We used Magic for several years in a row. Small groups with good instruction and excellent spoken English. They do meet at la Chaudanne in Meribel but as others have said the ski down from Mottaret is very gentle and the ski back is pretty straightforward as well.

@olderscot, which way back are you advocating? The way down from the Toughnet (sp) is easy, except for a really steep bit at the top off the lift.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks, really helpful. Sounds like the run down to Meribel is an easy one - how long would you allow for this roughly (allowing for lots of snowploughing 😊)

Also keen to understand the route back to Mottaret , initial few days might best on the bus, but later in the week are the options blue or red?

Ha yes, you're right. Although I had to think about it a bit. If I remember correctly you turn right just below the Tougnete 1 cabin station and the very first bit is a steepish drop. I think that bit is very short though and is graded Green so. Maybe not great for nervous beginners but is it any worse than the other pistes you're going to find around Mottaret?

PS. You probably won't need lot's of snowplouging. Most of Truite is slow enough even with your skis parallel so you'll only need a few bits of snowploughing. Probably a good idea to give yourself plenty of time on the first day but I doubt if it will take much longer than 10-15 minutes or so. This will give you an idea of what it's like

Agree with olderscot- you WON'T go on that steep bit on the way to Meribel, and about 10-15 mins is right when you have your bearings. The steep bit we're talking about is a green! But the first 100m is as steep as any blue. After a week's skiing before, you may well be absolutely fine- I'm channelling my wife's timidity. And I wouldn't want your first day spoiled after a nice day due to a fall or scare. happened to her, and knocked her confidence badly (though we started in our 50s, and bumps can be harder to shake off.) We love Meribel though, and you will too, I'm sure.

Ski Marmalade brilliant, and if you are using them they might meet you and drop you off where it suits you, though Truite is pretty easy.

One thing to think about is that the Truite can be bullet proof first thing in the morning. Maybe catch the bus down to Meribel on the first morning if they are nervous.

Plus ones for New Gen and Marmalade. Also check out Parallel Lines who are also British run and great.

To get back from the Chaudanne in Meribel either take the Tougnete bubble or Plan de l'homme chair. If you already have skis on the the latter avoids the hassle of taking your skis off and putting them back on again on leaving the bubble. From the chair exit turn left follow the easy blue Grive piste across the top of the Elements fun park back to the top of the bubble.

Then turn right just below the bubble station and follow the green piste Perdrix back to Mottaret. You can avoid the really steep bit at the start of Perdrix by instead following Lievre towards Meribel for a short distance, usually to the third piste marker on the right hand side, and then make a sharp right turn along a short pisted track to rejoin below the steep bit.

There has been a lot of work recently carried out to provide beginner-friendly pistes in Mottaret. There are now a number of green pistes including a Zone Tranquille.

Find out more here:

Also to aid beginners returning to Mottaret from the Chaudanne area in Meribel the steep part of the piste just below Tournette 1 lift station has been provided with a less steep 'by-pass'. The entrance to this by-pass is just 30 metres further away from the Tournette 1 lift station than the steeper part. EDIT: (as mentioned by ecureuil above)

Three of my friends were absolute beginners in Meribel last year and used Lara Ski - hiring her as a small group. Worked out quite cost effective and had really good feedback

Thanks everyone. We've taken recommendation of a few of you and booked with New Generation lessons in Meribel. The Truite looks manageable -thanks for link to video clip and also for the advice on how to get back to Mottaret. Very excited about our holiday now. Bring on the snow❄️❄️❄️
