Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski touring near Innsbruck

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi everyone,

I am in Innsbruck for the month of Jan visiting with my family from Australia and was hoping to do some touring (actually splitboarding) in the area. Google isn't yielding a lot in terms of advice on where.

I will be solo, basic AST1 knowledge, not at my fittest and therefore looking for safe touring, not too strenuous and more about getting fit and the views than the line down. Skinning up pistes obv an option, but hoping for something more peaceful. I will probably be on public transport too.

Any suggestions?

Hi stevelovespow & welcome to Snowheads

Skitouring offpiste alone in an area that you are not familiar with could be a recipe for disaster and a holiday your family and friends will never forget but for the wrong reasons.

Some resorts don't mind people skining up the sides of the piste some are totally against it - maybe some locals here can say where it's not a problem.
These resorts around Innsbruck allow night ski touring http://www.mountaineers.at/winter/nachtskitouren

If money isn't an issue there are plenty of places that offer guides for Ski touring but it can cost €100+ a day.

Looks like the Alpenverein have a Ski touring program see page 4 - they charge a fee which tends to be lower than the Skischools/guides (typically €40-50 per day. Joining the Alpenverein also gives you mountain rescue insurance.

The young locals who go ski touring are most likely much fitter and better skilled than a "tourist" so while hooking up with a local could be good you are likely to hold them back - maybe an option in the last two weeks when you are fitter.

I work shifts and often go Ski touring during the week in Eastern Austria. Most of the other Ski tourers I meet are retired but be warned some of them are extremely fit too.
Your best bet might be to try and hook up with local pensioners, or someone local who tours but who wants to improve their English. Maybe the Innsbruck locals here can point you in the right direction to Internet Forums / groups for Ski touring in the Innsbruck area.

It's a great area have fun. snowHead

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thank DB, appreciate the advice. A guide at first then transitioning to an attempt to keep up with locals sounds sensible.

Kühtai is a Ski touring paradise but looks like you need to get into a larger group (approx 6 People) or it will be mega expensive.

Don't forget to mention that you are on a split board not sure about touring but I know some guides don't do mixed (Ski & board) freeriding groups.

Hey!

There's a metric poo-poo ton of great skitouring around here, but most of the information is in German.

People regularly skin up all the local resorts, and whether it's officially allowed or not it's fully accepted.

IF you want wilder or more freeride touring, again there's so much it's hard to know where to begin... One of my favourite zones is the Kalkkögel - look at the piste map of Axamer Lizum, and it's the small valley just to the (lookers) left of the left-most piste. I regularly go there solo, but it's fairly steep terrain and you definitely need to be aware of the snow and avalanche risk.

There's also lots at Kühtai. Just head up to the resort and look around and take your pick.

This is useful Facebook group, and I'm sure people will be helpful even if you post in English: https://www.facebook.com/groups/skitoureninnsbruck/

Last year some of the Black Crows starting a night touring group - not sure if they will again this year or not, but could be a good way to meet people: https://www.facebook.com/groups/NoctouringSociety/

If you can understand the German, there's loads of ideas for touring on the web, like here: http://www.almenrausch.at/touren/skitouren/tirol/innsbruck-umgebung-axamer-lizum-senderstal.html

Feel free to give me a shout when you get here too - depending on work/snow/etc I can either give you some pointers or show you some places.

Oh, and I keep a thread here about snow conditions: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=127917

Might be interesting for you to see how the snow builds up, and might give you some further ideas.

DB,

I didn't realise that you can do "official" night ski touring. That sounds great!

I'm not familiar with the skiing round Innsbruck and all the spots listed seem to be specific mountain names, a joch, Alm or Huette. Other than Axamer and Serlesbahn it's difficult to identify any specific place names.

Can you point me in the right direction please?

And also, am I right in presuming that night tourers stick to pisted descents on safety grounds? I noticed that one of those on the list specifically lists pistes open for night tourers.

I wouldn't mind giving it a go. We've got some decent off-road bike lights that fit onto our helmets and they would come in handy. wink

Our only night tour to date was under a full moon at Yad Moss in the Pennines. A 90 minute drive each way and home just before midnight on a work night. Great fun! Very Happy

@Bergmeister, there's a list here of the local resorts with official night skiing policies and the nights allowed (given growing operations): http://blogtirol.at/2014/12/nachtskitouren-auf-der-piste/

All piste tours btw. I guess there's no reason you couldn't do an offpiste night tour given sufficient moon/headlamp light, though I never have. Somewhere like Axamer Kogele (old unused piste from Axamer Lizum to Axams village) or the closed ski resort at Pettneu am Arlberg could be options.
