Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

His middle section contained a bit where he could improve a little, if he gets that right he could easily win this...I just hope he gets a clean run and a podium!

I thought we weren't allowed to talk about ski racing on a skiers forum in case someone is waiting to watch Ski Sunday in December or something and it may ruin their TV or something....

Just avoid spoilers in the thread's Subject. If you want to watch it on delay TV don't open the obvious threads.

Gutting! He was skiing beautifully on that run so was really galling to see. Levi seems to suit his style but it’s a great sign of things to come, especially as he had so much time in hand. Hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer before he’s on the top step.

Well it seems the Austrians no longer welcome Mr ryding to train with them on their Hill. Not in interests of austrian success anymore - I guess he's got just too fast now

Ah yes, sounds like it was the austrian skiing president doing what he can....

ÖSV President Peter Schröcksnadel seem to be a thorn in the side of Dave Ryding's achievements. It's difficult to explain otherwise why the 76-year-old Tyrolean, who is also co-owner of Hinterstoder-Wurzeralm Bergbahnen AG, gave the British slalom specialist a kind of training ban on "his" mountain, the Höss.
As reported by the "Oberösterreichische Nachrichten", Kitzbühel's previous year's second contractually granted privileges, such as the use of the infrastructure of the Land Service Center, were withdrawn.

The commentary from Nick Fellows on Ryding's runs is absurdly biased though - twice today he churned out how "a couple more gates and Ryding would have won" which was based on nothing more than wishful thinking on his part (he never says that about any other competitor), and he totally missed Ryding's fall (excusable in the fog).

Do wish he'd be a bit more objective in his commentaries.

Fixed it for you!

He really is the most annoying man. We play "Fellows Bingo". Every single race it's the same old commentary. Points awarded for any mention of racers' famous skier siblings or parents, double points if he says exactly the same thing in both runs. Also phrases, "Long levered", "There are no team rules in alpine racing". Yes, it's nice to know that people get married and now have a different name. But we don't need to hear it every race. Or hear that every Canadian is a "Crazy Canuck" or Norwegian an "Attacking Viking". And why does he pronounce everyone's name in an English accent except Pinturault, which he pronounces like Inspector Clouseau would?

Sorry, he gets right up my nose. I've even taken to watching Eurosport player replays where there's no commentary at all!

Ski racing commentary is a joke, loads of skiers who were marginal at best expressing their "expert" opinions on what the skiers are doing......like they lead by example back in the day....I don't think so. I refuse to watch BBC Ski Sunday and listen to the ramblings on there, they assume that all watchers are primary school age I think, at least Eurosport are mildly objective and assume the watcher has some understanding of the racing, still cringeworthy though.

Eurosport's commentators (especially Fellows and Clark in previous years) miss the fundamental of TV commentating: let the pictures tell the story. Too much gas, not enough gaps!

Watching th eruns from Adelboden last night, I am no expert, but I thought there was a big difference in fluidity between Hirscher (and everyone else) but that Ryding seemed to be "brutalising" the snow - anyone who knows what they are talking about got an opinion?

Anyone know who commentated sunday morning’s ladies slalom on Eurosport 2. He was solo and found him very good - just called it as he saw it from the small screens at the Eurosport studios.

@Ozboy, was it Matt Chilton? He usually does solo and is better than Fellows.

@Markymark29, nearly all sports commentary is by experts that weren’t the best. In much the same way that many trainers weren’t at the very top, it’s possible to be able to comment on what someone should be doing without being able to do it yourself.

@SnoodlesMcFlude, yes probably him. Experts that can also commentate is a unique skill. Most events tag team a commentator and a expert. It goes bad when they encroach on each others roles - Carlton Kirby does this a lot cycling commentary and makes glaring mistakes.

@SnoodlesMcFlude,

Credit to CK though as he covers a massive range of sports, some of which are slow action, and have a very ‘expert’ audience due to their narrow manority audience. Eurosport probably could not survive without people like him on the payroll. He will pop up lots during the W Olympics.

@Ozboy, I don’t have too much of a problem with his insight (or lack of), it’s his monotone and the fact his era and umms his way through the action. I actually think he sucks away some of the excitement on the rallying that he commentates on.

Yep, absolutely agree. Wasn't just as bad when he had John Clark beside him although Clark had a terrible knack for applying the 'curse of the commentator'

Finlay Mickel, for all his experience, doesn't add much which is surprising in Downhill and Super G if more understandable in technical events. That said he could argue that getting a word in edgewise is an issue.

His pronunciation of most names is poor but of Germanic names it's appalling. So bad I sometimes wonder if its deliberate? Patrick Küng of Switzerland was called Patrick 'Kooeng' for years until someone presumably corrected him! Whenever an Austrian official is spotted he refers to some organisation called the Österreichischer Skiverein (Austrian Ski Club?) as opposed to Österreichischer Skiverband (Austrian Ski Association)

The strange one is Pinturault who seems to get him really excited. Puzzled rolling eyes Shocked To the extent that we say - oh here comes 'boyfriend' A terrible way to refer to poor Alexis but there's something quite unsettling about the excitement in Fellowes voice....

Watching the downhill and realised another thing that annoys me about Nick Fellows. He’ll explain really simple things (like “slalom is two runs, aggregate time”) but then make throw away comments like “they’re repairing the A and B nets” with no explanation of what they are and what the difference between them is. It’s weird how he treats the audience like they’ve never seen a ski race for some of the time, then glosses over some of the stuff that even regulars might not know.
