Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

andolini. I've not skied there, but the history of Etna's skiing has been much affected (to put it mildly) by regular eruptions. These have destroyed the ski infrastructure - lifts and buildings - from time to time, so I don't know what's currently operating.

It would be fantastic to have an update on the scene up there - there used to be two ski areas (northern and southern) on Etna, but I've seen no reports for a while.

Hope you get to ski it - please keep us posted.

And welcome to snowHeads!

Cheers Dave, and thanks for the welcome, have mailed the tourist office in catania but not heard back yet , think the last
eruption was in 2002 and like you say some lifts destroyed, think on the lower section.
Hoping to sort something out rather than fork out for 2 trips in march , seems mad as you like to ski the side of an active volcano !

BBC was reporting last January that reconstruction after the 2001/2 eruptions had started. Doesn't sound too hopeful of things having re-opened by now.

This sounds a lot more hopeful:

2 lifts open in the north, and 1 in the south.

I've skied there for one morning, a few years ago. There are (were) a few moderately steep pistes on the south and the north flanks of the volcano, but generally fairly limited terrain is available. You need a lot of snow for off-piste because the terrain is so rough. If you want views of the summit craters (which are usually emitting copious quantities of volcanic gas) the skiing on the north flank near Linguaglossa offers better sightseeing from the ski slopes (assuming that lifts and pistes have been rebuilt since the last eruption).
