Poster: A snowHead

New Year week was busy, and also struggled with the conditions a little bit, with not all runs open and no easy ways down open it was a little bit of carnage on the reds below Morenia and then the blue below Spielboden down to the village. Not sure if it was busier or just felt it. We are back out 9th March so will have a better comparison then.

@PowderAdict, are you back from your trip yet? How was the snow, and was the resort busier than usual?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@suggul, Still in the resort. Until yesterday they had little new snow since New Year (the biggest snow fall blew away the following day). The snow that had fallen had been retained due to low temperatures, and it was the first year that there had been snow on the ground from Geneva all the way to Saas-Fee.
The pistes have been in good condition, mainly man made below mid station, so better in the morning and getting a little polished in the afternoon. Glaciers of course have the best snow. The resort and pistes are quiet, but this is low season.
Absolutely no off piste, with the coverage as it would 'normally' be in November. Some areas where I normally ski were showing metre sized boulders, that I was unaware of. We had 4cm of snow yesterday, with 20-25cm forecast later in the week.
With regards to the Lift Pass offer, I was talking to the hotel manager, and he said the main rational behind the offer was that the resort costs the same to run whether there are 50 or 5000 skiers, as all the lifts and facilities and staff need paying. He mentioned that the hotel bought 400 of the offer passes to sell to guests, so that would have boosted the total. He also said that the lift company has significantly more money at the start of this season, than the end of last season, so they are in a much better position. Whether or not this causes serious impact to future years remains to be seen.

@PowderAdict, thanks for the info. That's v interesting about the lift passes. I was looking at a hotel website and they were also offering the season lift pass for CHF222. I wonder how many of the 75,000 (or whatever they sold) passes were bought by the hotels to then offer as packages.
