Poster: A snowHead
|
Ok, so I am going to be spending January through to the end of April in the Alps. I will be skiing both on and off piste. There will be one return trip to UK in mid Feb. I have been looking at quotes for insurance and BMC would work, but at nearly £400 it seems quite steep.Have looked at Dogtag and their trip maximum tales them out of the frame. Snowcard are another possible and their quote looks like being about £260. I see the Austrian Alpine club also does insurance, but I am going to be skiing in France and Italy (not that this makes any difference). What do those snowheads who ski all season do?
Thanks in advance.

I had two quotes for season long insurance for the US from MPI and another one. Both were near a thousand pounds. Needless to say I won't be using them, but the best quote I got was still 381 off piste with guides 499 without guides. That was from JS Insurance. Worth looking at if just for Europe.

@Ian Kenvyn, I just join the Austrian Alpine Club UK branch for £45 and get basic rescue and sports cover (talking full mountaineering / off piste etc) which is provided as part of membership. With the EHIC I am pretty much covered as most of the standard ski insurance is limited in the value of ski equipment covered. The money I have saved on not insuring my kit over the years is now enough to replace anything that did go missing.

I'd second using JS insurance, mine was 113 quid, all season including off piste. I'm only in France but am pretty sure it's Europe wide.

MPI for most of the expats in Tignes, about 200 quid for me for the season, you can customise your quote on the website (eg I delete cancellation etc). They are also very helpful on the phone.

I was really surprised by my MPI insurance quote, considering I had been insured with them for 10 seasons working for UK TO's. JS Insurance it is.

AAC covers world wide below 6000m excluding Arctic and Antarctic regions so is pretty inclusive.

What is AAC. Advanced Audio Coding? First entry on Google. That's why I hate acronyms. They mean different things in different sectors.

The only drawback with the AAC insurance is that the cover for emergency medical treatment, transportation and repatriation only applies for the first 8 weeks of any trip abroad. Last season I contacted M.P.I. after 8 weeks and insured myself and Mrs TT for the rest of the season - not worth the risk of being uncovered. However, if you return to the UK briefly in the middle of the season, the 8 weeks starts again. Also, even if you have to re-insure after 8 weeks, the AAC cover for that initial period obviously makes the insurance for the remainder of the season much more affordable.
