Poster: A snowHead

is there much impact likely? In other words, any weeks I should try to avoid due to crowds? Based on the price of the swiss franc and the fact that the holidays for the Swiss seem widely distributed, I am thinking it probably doesn't matter, but thought it was worth requesting opinions.

If you want to avoid crowds January is the best month. It's not just Swiss holidays you need to worry about but also holidays in other countries in Europe.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@mr. mike, which Swiss resorts are you thinking of in particular? Generally there isn't the same impact of (any) school holidays compared to the crowds you seen in France in the French holidays or Austria during the German holidays. Resorts close to Swiss cities tend to get very busy at weekends, particularly if the weather and snow is good, but are then very quiet in the week.

@mr. mike, Swiss Schools stagger their holidays, like most resorts, February and early March are slightly busier. Then of course Christmas and Easter. As above weekends will be busier. Last week in January and Mid to late March are normally very quiet.

@ Gamsbock: in particular, thinking of Zermatt and/or V'al d'anniviers.

The Anniviers should be quiet in January. It will get busier in February. Zermatt is in a different league, in terms of costs, village sizes and available terrain.

Verbier in March is about as good as it gets anywhere on the planet.
Zermatt is good but overrated.
Val d'Anniviers is pretty and good, but fragmented.

True as regards cost, but I always say to skiers that Zermatt is one place they should make sure they visit at least once in their life - it is an amazing location with (in my view) the most photogenic mountain in the world and some great skiing to be had.

@mr. mike, by the way, given your location have you ever skied at Obergatlinburg? Some years ago I was driving through that area (in Summer) and took the aerial tramway up to the top.

It also makes a good day trip from Saas Fee - itself a delightful resort.

You know it makes sense.

@Alistair Pink: never skied Ober. Grew up 150 kms northeast of there, so we were a little closer to a couple of ski areas in the northwestern corner of North Carolina (Beech and Sugar), which were a little better than Ober, although "less bad" is probably more descriptive.
Regarding Zermatt/Anniviers it's not an either/or call. If we go to Switzerland, we will definitely do Zermatt because my wife hasn't been there, and I agree that it's one of those places that should be visited. The question is whether we will spend the entire week in Zermatt or spend 3-4 days in Zermatt and then bounce over and include a couple of days in Anniviers. The downside of doing the combo is that it spends a day that could be spent skiing on travel. The benefit is that (1) my wife likes to move around and see different things more than she likes to ski, and (2) I have been intrigued about the Anniviers since first reading about it a few years ago but have never been there ( skied Zermatt for a week about 15 years ago, pre-marriage).
