 Poster: A snowHead
|
Afternoon Guys,
Signed up quite some time ago, but haven't used posted... until today!
Group of lads heading off to Val d'Isere 25/2 for a week. Looking for hints, tips and recommendations.
Does anyone have any contacts for accommodation?
Cheers,
Kris

Timing is important, depending on what you seek. Avoiding school holidays is generally the best plan for the best week skiing, especially French school breaks.
Group of lads might be better trying December before Xmas when Universities send large crowds of roudy drunks. It depends on whether you are going for the skiing or the apres. Your age might indicate what might suit better.
La Daille tends to be cheaper than the town centre, and using the furnicular first thing in the morning gets you right to the top quickly. (as opposed to the many chair lifts from Tignes Les Breviers or Tignes Les Boisses)
I suspect self catering in La Daille is probably your best option, although again it depends on numbers age and your wallet size.
No specific recommendation, as it depends on who you are and what you seek. You would be best speaking to a specialist
Wecome to snowheads!

Hi BigTipper,
Appreciate your detailed response! Val d'Isere certainly isn't my first choice, but a mate is starting a season there in November. Given it's his first time, he hasn't any useful contacts.
Personally, I wouldn't be going in February either as prices rocket. We often head out beginning of January, straight after NY. Unfortunately, we have to tie in with Spanish school holidays as a mate works out there as a teacher.
If it's a decent chalet, I'm happy spending £1k +. Have gone 'cheap and cheerful' in Andorra at £500 all in and 'all out' in VT at £1,200. As a group of 10/12, we should be able to get something decent.
My only concern is it falls inside school holidays. Though our wallets are pretty flexible, we all want value for money.
Thanks for the welcome!
Cheers,
Kristian

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Regading the article from the Mail online; I went to Magaluf/Palma Nova when I was 18 and I can assure you that Val d'Isere is not really comparable. You might be able to get to Val for £500-£600 for a week, but you have lift pass, ski hire, and other costs (£10 a pint), which make the all in holiday costs well in excess of £1,000. You can get an all in holiday in Magaluf for £300-£500!
So, for starters, that means there is a talent selection criteria. It also means that most people are really going to Val to ski, and those out partying are probably children of those who pay to go skiing in Val d. (excepting the universities week/weeks in December)
The male/female ratio in Val d is heavily in favour of male, but probably a more equal ratio than St Anton where it is mostly male.
It is the skiing I go for, and Tignes les Boisses or Tignes les Brevieres (even la Recluse), is fine by me. Although La Daille can often work out the best price.
Have fun!

I first read that article last year while I was on holiday in Val. It's hilariously inaccurate.
We stayed right off the main street, in the very heart of the town and no more than 3 minutes walk to the main skiing base area. We ate out every night, so we definitely had the measure of the place. In our 9 day trip, I honestly didn't see or hear a single person who could fairly be described as drunk.
I'm sure I could have found some inebriated students if I'd gone looking for them in the small number of bars that seemed to cater for that market. But drunkenness certainly wasn't in evidence on the streets, and drunken, loutish behaviour wasn't remotely a problem to me.

Correct about the Funi from Daille but both Brev and Boisses now have bubbles - still too far from Lac for my liking but it's not slow, as it used to be.

As I said, it is a timing issue. Universities send coach loads of students in the run up to Christmas to Val d'Isere. That is when the debauchery occurs. If you go over Xmas, or other peak times, the resort is much more sedate. It is not a uniform occurrence, it happens in the cheap weeks.....

That should mean that these places get more bookings in early season.
