A friend needs to have some snow chains to fit his FRV sport for his annual ski trip. The manual says that they won't fit. He's looking at renting some Spykes Spyders, does anyone have any experience of these, and more specifically with this model of car?
Thanks in advance.

Kramer, Spykes spiders are excellent but expensive even to hire.
Manuals seem to be airing on the side of caution re chains.
Might be worth your friend chcking with 2/3 chain suppliers to see what they say.

Another advantage of spykes is that they adjust to fit many different tyre sizes.
There are some chains including a set for 4x4's in the Buy and Sell thread at the moment

Kramer, I use Spykes Spyders on my (rear wheel drive) car - they are brilliant, with fitting time less than 30 seconds per wheel. I have always found conventional chains a real pain to fit (especially with rear wheel drive - you can't turn the wheel to look behind), and wanted something convenient for spending a season out here. Once fitted, I have had no problems driving with them - they seem to work just as well as conventional chains.

Does anyone know whether they will affect his warranty?

Kramer, Check with Honda. I had an interesting discussion with Jaguar and the answer was no it doesn't.

Try the Pewag website, they say they have chains for the FRV.
I got my pewags from a website in Germany, if he's looking to buy I'll dig ther URL out.

I think that part of the problem is that he has the "sport" model, which has wider wheels which makes things a little more problematic.

I've used Spikes Spiders on a car with wheels/tyres unsuitable for snow chains. They're easy to fit and did not cause any problem, and they worked (once on the, business end looks like conventional chains, so far as I can see). They are expensive, 'though.
BTW, as you probably know, the problem is not (just) getting the chains to fit over the tyre, it's not damaging the wheel and, more importantly, not damaging the running gear immediately inboard of the wheel. The problems tend to be worst with low profile tyres, I think. If the worst comes to the worst, changing tyres is an (expensive) option.

I think it hinges on Reccomendation v. Instruction
Pirelli winter tyres are reccomended for my car and intially they (Jag) said anthing else would invalidate the warranty, but after discusion they agreed that I could fit any tyres as no Pirelli's were available! and therefore waranty would not be affected. (and it's in writing!)

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Another advantage of Spykes is that they have no steel chain against the alloy wheel.
