Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

They're certainly making huge amounts while it's cold enough. They'll survive any mild spell and get spread out as a base ready for Val Gardena's opening weekend on 3rd Dec, just over 3 weeks away!! snowHead

Just 3 days of cold temps needed for the 69 state-of-the-art snow cannons to cover the entire Saslong WC Downhill course to a depth of 40cm with artificial snow. It's 3500m long and 70-80m wide... Shocked

ARPAV are reporting accumulations of 11-29cm in N Dolomites from last weekend's event with up to 10cm of new snow in the last 24h...not as impressive as the falls reported in the NW Alps of 60-100+cm, but a useful wintry-looking start on the webcams and cold enough temps for the snowmaking to kick into top gear and lay down a good base for the season opening...

I don't want to put a dampener on things and it looks like it's going to be OK up high, but the current milder SW flow might bring some rain to the valleys over the coming week...Bergfex says snowline hovers around 1700-2000m. Sad

http://www.bergfex.com/arabba/wetter/prognose/

But I guess once it turns cold again they'll switch on the cannons and repair any damage to the home runs. There should be plenty at altitude ready for those early opening dates. snowHead

The mysterious mounds are still at Plan de Gralba, but now surrounded by brown grass! Sad

The mild, soggy conditions have certainly taken their toll lower down. Up high above 2000m there's been some useful snowfall, but not the huge dumps seen at altitude in NW Italy in the Monte Rosa resorts, Cervinia & Sestriere. snowHead

The Alta Badia (Corvara/La Villa/San Cassiano) is an intermediates paradise - lots of cruisy blues

Canazie has the Belvedre bowl above it and the area above Alba (ten minutes up the valley) is another area suitable for intermediates.

Last season there was a 2 month drought from mid-November to mid-January, thankfully by mid-Feb when I arrived normal service had resumed and we had an overnight snowfall in Alleghe village at 1000m. snowHead

Hopefully by January 2017, there'll be some natural cover top to bottom to supplement the man-made stuff...though nothing too hopeful yet in the forecasts! Sad

It really wasn't that obvious last January that there had been little to no natural snow for weeks. We were staying in
Pedraces and yes the piste down from Santa Croce had brown fields and trees on the boundaries but the artificial cover was excellent. Once we got up into the main areas from La Villa it was hardly noticeable and very few pistes were closed.

We are going late March this year so things could be quite different but still very enjoyable snowHead

Not a classic start to the season and a bit of re-run of last year, but many lifts opened over the weekend. snowHead

219 out of 460 lifts showing open this morning with 405km of piste across 11 out of 12 of the Dolomiti Superski areas.

The Sella Ronda Clockwise route is fully open today. Counter-clockwise is almost complete from Arabba-Corvara-Selva-Col Rodella, then using downloads between Col Rodella & Lupo Bianco above Canazei...looks like just one vital piste closed in the Belvedere-Pordoi sector which means the link back to Arabba isn't complete.

http://www.dolomitisuperski.com/en/live-info/open-lifts

No significant natural snow on the 16-day forecasts and temps look to rise as winds swing around in the current persistent High Pressure zone, but it looks like the temps have been cold enough to cover many of the vital lower pistes with artificial.

http://old.wetterzentrale.de/pics/MS_1146_ens.png

That pesky High Pressure needs to slip away east...in the meantime enjoy the wall-to-wall sunshine!! Cool

World Cup racing in Val Gardena on the 16th & 17th...as long as you weren't hoping for off-piste, I'm sure you'll have fun as there's a lot of piste skiing open already...night-time top-ups from cannons & immaculate grooming will keep it all going if the current drought continues! snowHead

You may be lucky and the High Pressure slips away and lets some fresh moisture in from the Med, they can sometimes do that with only 48-72hrs notice on the charts...so there's still time!

There is a glint of hope of a breakdown early next week and although it sounds like it will only benefit Austria, a change in the pattern is welcome if we want fresh natural snow in the Dolomites, the situation is well-described here...

This Trip Report thread has been updated with a new report from Val Gardena (Plan de Gralba, Col Rodella, Passo Sella) on Sun 4th Dec...looks like if you stay high (above 1800-2000m) & north-facing, there's plenty of good piste skiing available...looks a bit brown lower down and on the sunny aspects, but at least the peaks are all white this year! snowHead

Hopefully the very dry air currently over the Dolomites (below 20% humidity) together with the weak sun and long shadows will retard the rate of snow loss, despite the double digit temperatures forecast over the next couple of days.

There seems to be agreement of a cool down after that and hopefully a return to snow making. I’m guessing they still have plenty of water (and money) left!

According to Bergfex two thirds of the lifts and more than half the runs in the Sella Ronda appear to be open. That’s remarkable !

There is little prospect in this model run of heavy snow in the foreseeable future, but perhaps it would be a shame to let poor visibility, wind and wet spoil the spectacular views and the sunny, empty runs.
Cool
