Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

M20 Closed Maidstone

For anyone travelling to or from the Dover ferries or Eurotunnel, the M20 is shut both directions due to a bridge collapse. Doesnt look like any easy fix so expect it to last a while http://www.kentonline.co.uk/malling/news/bridge-collapses-on-motorway-101496/

Left side looks fine. No idea why they had to shut both sides! Very Happy

I came around the North side of the M25 at 18:30, and every overhead matrix sign was saying M20 Junctions 1-4 closed.

@foxtrotzulu, what, other than the half of the bridge on the other side being turned into a ski jump wink

Thats not going to be a quick fix.

Some questions are going to be asked too, wagon shouldnt really be able to impact at such an impact that it drops the whole bridge! Would be interesting to see how high the barrier is the and the post centres.

Big oops.

Welcome to my World . . . I do very few 'overheight/oversize' runs, but EVERY bridge/crossover/tunnel/etc. has to be mapped and annotated on the 'permit' application and detours to avoid can add hundreds of miles to a drive. This was a driver fookoop and 'over here' he'd be slapped with criminal charges and his company would be on the hook for ALL the costs incurred.

@Masque, The same will happen here. Looking at the pictures of the digger that appears to have actually hit the bridge the one thing the driver did a good job of was chaining it on, it does not appear to have moved at all. You can assume all bridges in the UK have at least 5m clearance unless they are signed otherwise. Running box trailers, curtaintrailers at just under 5m is pretty common. Looking at the digger I reckon the reason it has happened is that the bucket is the "wrong" way on the digger, most of the time it would be the other way round (with the cavity towards you) but occasionally they are reversed into "face shovel mode" like this which means when they have loaded it on the truck the vertical "dipper arm" has not reached the floor like it normally would with the bucket crowded and this has made the overall height that bit more than normal. Still does not actually look 5m high though.
The fact that the white truck with the box trailer was alongside looks to have helped avoid a worse disaster.

Not at all! The whole thing seems rather odd. The white truck was obliterated. (understandably / soft material)
The "culprit" truck though should have been somewhere around the 55/60 mph mark... and I dont care how good your chaining skills are, something is getting messed up at that speed!

As a minimum, I'd expect the hydraulic lines to have been torn from the boom of the excavator.

It looks like there was construction work happening on the bridge (there are barriers on the sides of it). Have to wonder if that contibuted.

Theres a video on bbc news where they fly around the scene. It looks like the end of the boom hit it square on.

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
Initial story was that Lowloader with Excavator on board was running on the Hard Shoulder, from the pics it looks like the bridge was built sloping, possibly less than the standard 16ft clearance over the Hard Shoulder?
The bridge was under repair and if you looked where it snapped there appears to be a calcium build up...

Sorry but it looks like the digger did hit the bridge.

Did it hit at very low speed and stop directly under it? Did the bridge collapse from the effect of a vehicular "one inch punch"?

The road will be shut from 8pm tomorrow (Friday) and remain closed until 6am Monday while they remove the bit left standing. Cue chaos.
