Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Brake rubs on edge

Hi All, just received my son's new K2 Shreditor 85 skis, which are the same model as he had last season (just 10cm longer). The ski width is the same, as is the binding, Fastrack2.

You can see on his old ski (on the left in the photo) the brake is bent better to give to clearance from the edge. On his new skis, the plastic bit on the brake rubs on the edge. It stops it going up and down smoothly. I don't think it will be a problem clipping on, and the brake does go down when released.

I've tried bending it a bit by hand, but it just sprung back and I'm worried about damaging something if I force it more.

Its probably not worth thinking about (?) but its irritating me. The skis don't slide and clip together properly either.

Worth sending them back or just live with it?

@Themasterpiece, ...the binding may be 'the same' but there are different width brakes which fit readily to this binding, to match to different width skis. The old skis appear to have a salomon brake which the tech has fettled a bit - by removing the brake and taking some mole grips to it, usually. Yes I would worry about it. Ice can build up more readily if the clearances aren't right, and then the brake jams 'off' - which is immensely dangerous in all sorts of ways - 'goodbye ski....'.

I have looked carefully at the two skis and i think that the brake is actually the same width in both cases - but not easy to tell from here - which the tech has opened out, and then put an angle in. They MAY be wider brakes but they look the same across the top.

Only bend them when they have been removed from the bindings - the big zinc philips screw in the top, undo and tip brake forward and out of the retaining slots - and then you carefully can bend them without damaging things too easily. But take them to a ski shop and any good one will do it for nowt. Where are you based?

Themasterpiece, if he's not going to be using the old skis, just swap the brakes over.

Or as valais2, take the brake off and bend it a little - or seek out somewhere who will do it for you.

@Bones, good idea but I'll sell the old skis, and leave the bindings alone.

@valais2, thanks for the advice (and to @spyderjon for the photo). It is the same brake width and type as far as I can tell. I live in Stockholm so will either find a friend with a vice and have a go, or wait till the ski shops open and ask what they charge (probably a ridiculous amount as its Sweden).

do it the pro spyderjon way or just get some mole grips on it - You only need a slight flair to stop it catching on the edge. No need to pay a shop to do it.

Decided the "hobby room" in this apartment was missing a vice, so got one and did the job myself - the @spyderjon way rather than the mole grips. Probably a better place to tune/wax skis rather than in our lounge, which the wife will be happy about.
