Brit Tour Operators may just drop winter sports altogether if there is no money to be made.

No problem with that.....

@stanton, well done on showing a link that shows their share price dropped to 851 in July 2016 but has risen 35% since...... what is your point???
So see if your point is that the euro is going to effect ski holidays it will of course naturally effect all holidays regardless the time of year. Granted ski hols are slightly more specialist, but I'd wager a bet (with no proof of this I'll admit) that they usually make more profit on ski hols (due to sales of ski hire packages, lift passes etc that they make a mark up on) vs standard summer hols.
The only way TOs will stop selling winter hols is if they stop selling hols altogether....
I'm not sure the shareholders / investors would like that are you??

The share price has indeed done very well but as always you miss the point .....WinterSports make up a very small % of their Group Portfolio.

I'll give you that Skiing is always a smaller % of most TOs models but...
Rather than posting pointless links, get quotes.
From TUI themselves:
''Looking to its new financial year, TUI said winter bookings were up 5 percent''
Both companies, however, also had to contend with Britain's vote in June to leave the European Union, and led to worries that Britons would have less money to spend on holidays.
But to date, British holidaymakers have not been affected.
"If you think about Brexit, I would say I don't see a negative impact," Joussen said.
"The early bookings are indicating that it will be good''

PS I know 5% increase in bookings doesn't mean 5% increase in profit of course.... no doubt they are being squeezed

@PaulC1984, It will not be long before Winter Sports holiday Package Tours are dropped. The % of people arranging themselves has been increasing exponentially & I do not see that changing.
Winter Sports Packages are really only applicable from the UK & Scandinavia.

@stanton,
So are they going to be dropped because of bexit or because people are doing their own thing?
If the later as your previous post suggests then Brexit has nothing to do with it.
Do you have a link or better still a quote to prove TUI will be dropping winter holidays?? .....

I know someone who reports to board level in one of the larger TOs.
Although worry about the euro/GBP rates among brits was one of their headline concerns in 2016, in fact their biggest concerns last season and this are;
(a) The dates that Christmas falls/fell (flights / weekends etc) and
(b) Concern / perception among punters that there will be a lack of snow in some resorts before new year.

Tui is an example as they have a massive business model. If they see one part of their business in long term decline they will get rid of it .
Brexit will have an impact for sure without a doubt. Instability of the Pound v Euro possibly for the next three years.

@PaulC1984, it's an interesting one.
In the short term I'd actually expect more Brits to go the package/TO route over the next couple of seasons. Due to exchange rate fluctuations it generally seems cheaper than DIYing atm.
But if Freedom of Movement ends due to Brexit and TO's are no longer able to post staff abroad/have to hire on local contracts, everything will change, and I'd expect the chalet model in particular to be really threatened.

@clarky999, Yes. Obliterated IMO affordable to regular holiday folks.
The Chalet concept will revert back to its old well off exclusive upper class client business model that they spent years getting away from.
|
|

@clarky999, all ifs, buts and maybes though. The truth is that no one knows what kind of deal will be struck and how it'll work.

I think people who go on winter sports holidays are generally more fanatical about them than summer holidays and are more likely to keep their winter holiday and cut back on other holidays.
I don't know anyone who normally has a winter holiday who has cut it out for next season.

@JimboS, I know of regular UK folk who have definitely quit Xmas/ New Year Skiing (some who normally take 4 weeks+ Dec/Jan) due to the coming together of consecutive bad season starts & the fear that the value of the Pound/Euro by the time they would normally go is to much of a risk to take now.
They have decided to go to the Sun instead (Asia)
|

More fool them. I get the bad beginning of season concept though.

I suspect if there is a drop in early ski hol figured it would very much be down to snow rather than Brexit.
Let's start a snowheads poll and find out

The one thing that is certain is that the 'seconded employee' system has irked the French owned businesses and the French tax authorities for years. I cannot see this continuing in any similar shape or form after free movement stops.

Wrong again Mr Stanton...... previous posts have made links to the EU figures......... 3.3 million EU nationals currently in the UK, with 800,000 UK nationals in the EU zone.
You seem happy to constantly mis-quote to make your rants.

I don't recall you predicting that there would be increased demand in Spanish holidays. In fact I seem to remember you saying something along the lines of less Brits going on holiday.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Price increase based on increased demand. Wow, economics at work.

|
|
|
|
|
And if you listened my little cloggie friend, to the BBC this morning, (or indeed read to bottom of article...) you will have heard them also say that:
Yes, prices increasing, and probably due to FX effect, but:
1) demand drives price (see Blahblahblah post for my +1 reaction)
2) Spanish are using the money to invest in upgrading the facilities, hence you get more bang for your buck - I'd call it a trade-off.
3) Holiday makers are returning to Egypt - which in parallel with price rise will dampen demand for Spain, and hence effect a price drop in the future.
The latter is a bit of a shame, as I've really enjoyed 2 visits to Egypt when there's been no-one else around! (It doesn't do their economy any good to have people stay away though, so fair's fair)
