Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tried a few of W/C race skis at the ski test this week.

Dynastar G/S and Slalom
Rossi G/S and Slalom
Nordica G/S and Fischer Slalom.

Waist deep powder in parts, mostly above the knees.
Treeline, couloir, piste(unprepared 40cm fresh), big drops and as much air as i get.

After the side-splitting laughter i recieved by the technicians for choosing such skis i can only asume those of you whom prefer skiing this kind of ski as an all mountains ski, have your knees nailed together and ski like rabbits.
As much as i laughed, i did however fly and am not sure i then even managed to camber any of the above mentioned skis. Tip-toeing on thin ice was how i felt. Needless to say i returned to the test center, each time to applause to try the same places with freestyle skis.

Volkl Karma(plate now removed for easier fakee landings)
K2 Public Enemy(Same as)
K2 Silencer
Nordica Super Charger
Salomon Foil
Dynastar Nothing but Trouble

I cant say i can separate this lot; all new, well prepared and with perfect snow conditions. As always for me, Freestyle skis offer the perfect 'All Mountain' option. All of the above tested were around my '80mm' underfoot holy grail and for those whom disagree i feel further more sure this is the case. All of the above skied great in the powder, just allowing you to sit a little deeper in the snow, than the big mountain skis. Finding the centre of the skis is as always simple, due to the centred flex of freestyle skis and their side cut and length are perfect for snow-kissing carved turns on piste. All proved the perfect option in the trees, again due to their length and waist width. Couloirs, again so easy. I would however worry if the skis were not as well prepared on harder snow, piste or otherwise but then those of us looking for an 'All Mountain' ski, would probably advoid this and hack around of piste should that be the choice of conditions.

Back-Country Freestyle/Big Mountain.

Tried the lot; K2 Pontoon/Maiden/Seth Womens, Scott P4, List goes on............
Perfect conditions that is all except my little legs. Mach 10 with huge skis on slightly broken powder, requires a little more training and condition than i currently have, however the snow as i say was perfect and my brain and legs are separate entities. So now i need help getting around, but the memories will last for ever. I'm sure at one point, i counted to ten before i touched snow after leaving the ground, good job for K2 they had left my bindings set on 14 or they may have lost their skis, less good for my hamstring, that albeit still in one length has left me with no feeling in my toes.

Altogether, more of a great couple of days messing about in great snow on great skis. Women will be glad to see all the effort the factories are putting in to build great skis just for them.
Yet again there are no bad skis out there and very few new ones. To renforce my feelings about waist width, well there is practically nothing out there under 80/86mm, just pure piste and race. Twisted Evil

SMALLZOOKEEPER, my knees are only nailed together in bumps (as they should be) and I don't ski like a rabbit wink

I will try wide skis (again) for off pistey snow. I just have yet to find a better all round ski for myself than the Rossi 9XOs that I use. They are not, I hasten to add, WC race skis. I think a race GS ski might be slightly harder work. But, my premise still holds. If you can ski off piste, it really shouldn't matter what you're skiing on. Fair enough that freeride skis make off piste generally easier, no argument there. I just think their performance elsewhere leaves a little to be desired. And, it is going to be a rare pair of skis that are kept in the state of tune that you've been playing on. (not that I'm not jealous of course).

Atmic Metron B5s have a 76cm waist this year...does that make them a piste ski? Or a race one?

Honestly, neither. Metrons are not skis, just ski shaped advertising boards for Atomic. tee hee.

Next year, very few of these type of skis (What can we call them? "Punter-access-all-area-X"), will have a narrower waist tham 82mm. It's going to be hard not to put some in our range, but i hope we can remain somewhat pure to our position. Twisted Evil

SMALLZOOKEEPER, why would we want to give punters access to all areas? They'll just get lost, hit trees, get cold wet and grief from the missus, or worse...as evidenced in the last few days...

Skied the same run today that I skied on Thursday. On Thursday I skied it on an 82mm waist ski. Today I skied it on a 130mm waist ski. I like fat skis. They're fun.
