We are doing a summer hol in the mountains and are planning to drive down to Cortina. We are just over an hour from the Eurotunnel, so will get a 7am-ish crossing and want to crack on with a chunk of the drive to a pleasant overnight stay. Any suggestions?

@Perty, there some lovely towns and villages along both sides of the Rhine. It just depends on you. I used to stop at a village called Diblich or similar and stayed in a superb VFM hotel right on the bank of the Moselle.

rofl @ capri
they're going by tunnel, not cruise ship
Moselle is also a good choice (specially in summer), but leaves much of the mile crunching for the 2nd day. If it's too close, then make that the stop on the return journey.
Depends on what route you'd planned too.

I'd shoot for somewhere around Memmingen. 8-9 hrs driving from Calais depending on route and leadness of foot leaving about 4 hours the next morning to get you to Cortina for lunch.

If you are not too pushed for time you could go via Granada. It's a complicated route though so you either need to Focus or have an Escort.

You do get the experience of driving through the sierra and might even see a cougar or puma. Must 'ang a right at Reims though.

Don't cause any trouble for the locals whilst you're abroad. You won't be at all Popular and might end up needing the services of the Consul.

Spoiled for choice. Take the A40 (or possibly A55 or A60 if you're starting from Cambridge) and don't forget to have lunch in Farina.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I'll discuss the options with the Maestro. We are doing a big loop round, so after around 5 nights in the back of [a] Cortina (Ian Dury fans take note), a quick Fiesta, a trip to the Marina, we're heading back towards the Mont Blanc tunnel via a night or two in Verona, then a stop off at a mate's house in the 3V for a couple of nights (and a spot of house hunting!) before the standard non stop Allegro back home in a day.
Funny how there's never been a Ford Gravesend, a Vauxhall Sidcup or an Austin Bogner...

@Perty, What about the Black Forest?
We decided to stay in Titisee one time, just based on it's name.
