Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Georgian president opens new ski gondola, with Kalashnikov security

A new ski gondola has swung into action at the resort of Bakuriani in Georgia. Its president Mikhail Saakashvili has hailed the venture "The first modern cable way in the post-Soviet space."

That isn't a reference to any post-Soviet space programme - the gondola actually climbs Didveli Mountain, where the president has his sights set on hosting the Winter Olympics. The gondola serves gentle slopes (further lifts are planned for steeper pistes) but there was plenty of drama when the president took his inaugural trip:
Quote:
The top of the lift was guarded by Kalashnikov-toting men in black and the president himself carved his turns in the company of well armed skimobiles, giving the impression of a moveable James Bond sequence.

Saakashvili took advantage of the new facility, completing five or six runs and exhibiting a competent, if not expert, downhill style. The lift closed not soon after the president was whisked away in his line of black SUVs, despite arguments from a group of men who assured the operators that "Misha [the president] told me personally that we could go up one more time."

According to this entertaining report from The Messenger, President Saakashvili has promised free lift tickets for the next month.

The report makes a reference to "Niva drivers" trying to get up the access road - can anyone shed any light on this?
