Poster: A snowHead

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on winding out the DIN when storing skis for long periods. Is it a good idea or is it not going to make any noticeable difference?

I think it depends on the model of binding. I've been told it isn't necessary for mine (Marker Squire).

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@el nombre, I always do it - I have loads of skis to service and adjust for the immediate and extended family. They (the skis, not the kids) all get serviced, covered in storage wax, and the bindings adjusted to zero. Do I need to do it? Jon Coster had a pair which he left at DIN 12 (if I recall) and he tested them after they had been in the attic for ages. He has the proper-job testing kit - and they were still measuring exactly 12. But in the back of my mind is '...a compressed spring loses its temper...'
http://www.lesjoforsab.com/technical-information/durability.asp
and
https://www.quora.com/Do-springs-lose-energy-after-being-compressed-for-a-long-time
which suggests that it IS an issue under certain conditions - but that I am being far too conservative and wasting my time in relieving the bindings. I'll probably still do it. Or maybe not.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

What's a "long period"?
Should I be worried about the old ex rental 757s on my 9Ss that haven't been used since 1997?
Or is it geological time we should consider?

Absolutely no requirement to slacken off dins - there isn't one binding manufacturer that says to do this - and they're so concerned with litigation (especially in the US) that if it was an issue then it'd be in their tech manuals.
The only manufacturer that says anything on this subject is Dynafit who recommended closing their toe bindings when not in use but nothing for their heels. For that reason I'd recommend closing the toe on any make/model of tech binding.
I've know of a number of people who've slackened off their dins, then forgotten to reset them, who then pre-released on the first turn!

I had a friend who slackened his right off and forgot. The binding came apart and we had to spend an hour reconstructing it on the piste.
So do not touch them.

I too released my bindings for the summer a few years ago and forgot. I skied for 3 days before coming right out of my bindings. I somehow managed to stay upright but was very baffled as to how both of my skis released until I realised my blunder. Haven't released my bindings for the Summer since.

Ok good news. One less thing to worry about but will close the toe either way (king pins rather than dynafit but it can't hurt)

@nevergreenterrace, at least it shows your central over your skis, either that or you were skiing like a pussy or just sat at the bar

How does one 'close the toe'??

@essex,
Touring bindings. The ones with 2 prongs that stick in either side of the front of your boot.

You know it makes sense.

For tech bindings (Dynafit, Fritschi, Plum etc) just store them in the 'ski' position as opposed to the 'step in' position when not in use. Hope that makes sense!
