Poster: A snowHead

Well, right now I should be in La Thuile but, on Boxing Day, I broke my arm. Should be OK for the end of February, when we're going to Cervinia. Now my wife and I are rescheduling our January trip. We like Italy and La Thuile and Madonna are on the list. Trouble is we need to go in the week beginning 20th March. We've been later than this, at Easter, but only to high French resorts (Trois Vallees, La Plagne and Val d'Isere) and there was plenty of slush in the afternoon at lower levels. So, how are conditions likely to be in that week in La Thuile or Madonna? Obviously, there are no guarentees but I would be gratefull for any informed opinions

Ull, welcome to snowHeads.
I went to La Thuile for the weekend of 8th April last year, It was a little slushy on the lower slopes by the end of the day, but conditions were fine at the top and over in La Rossiere.
Obviously, what happened last year, may not be the same this year (he adds as a caveat)

Ull, last year snow was very patchy in La Thuile all season, the same appears to be true this season so far, conditions are much better in La Rosiere, however we were still able to ski to la Thuile in April but there was nothing below the gondola station. La Rosiere does appear to have a better snow record, possibly due to the extra height on the French side?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

We went 28th March last yr, stayed in La Rosiere but had great fun skiing down to La Thuile. Best conditions were in the pass between the 2 resorts.

Ull, I've been to Madonna in the first week in April a few years ago and had a great time with lots of snow - I understand they quite often get good late snow, and their weather patterns are quite different in the Dolomites to the Alps; the snow comes from the south.
