A friend of mine is in a pickle. This fb post explains the problem.
HELP! Does anyone know anyone who can collect a suitcase from Lost Property at Rome Airport? It belongs to my daughter J+ C+++++. Surprisingly she has been unable to find a courier company willing to collect it from the Lost Property Office and send it back to the UK. She is a professional photographer who was attending a photography conference in Rome last week and the most important contents of her suitcase is one her cameras. She cannot claim on the insurance as it is not missing. She has even considered returning to Rome to collect it (cost of return flight cheaper than the camera) but hates flying. If anyone can assist in part or all of the the process of getting the suitcase out of the airport, back to the UK and down to Cornwall she would be most grateful. The biggest problem is getting it released by security and customs which they will do if Jo provides documentation to the person collecting it. All expenses will be reimbursed or paid.
Or have any  s any idea how to get it home to her any other way?

Hmm. Pick up a suitcase in an airport and fly home with it, not knowing what's in it? Why doesn't the writer of the email get their backside down there, if the daughter hates flying. And how did she come to lose it in the first place?

If couriers are not going to take it on, I think this is a job for someone who personally knows and trusts the owner of the suitcase. That means family or close friends.

@sequoiaboard, have you spoken to them directly? Rather than repost from FB? And how did it end up in lost property? I can't, I'm afraid' see any mechanism other than idiocy (which may include excess drink had been taken) that this could come to pass.
I.e., if you are conscientious checking in it's the airport/airline's responsibility. If it was delayed en route, likewise. (I have had a case take 3 days to reach my flying through Rome and if I'd only been over nighting at my destination, it would have been delivered home.

So security and customs are happy to hand it over if you provide something from the owner (I assume she would also take full responsibility for what's in it).
This seems to me to cover any fears about what's in the case (in fact, you could probably reverse Trojan Horse her and smuggle a couple of keys of coke in it yourself).
Not to mention, you could open it and have a look in front of the security people once they hand it over I guess.
I'm not in Rome but if I was I wouldn't mind doing it.

I've spoken to Jo and and she says the authorities in Rome also want a list of what is inside before handing it over.
I suspect that I might be enjoying a brief trip to Rome soon. (Might as well as I'm broken after the Pre EOSB and can't work)

Was an'include me' on the bash. Followed elder daughter down Jerusalem one morning. Beautifully pisted until just below one of the bottom rollers. There, all across the piste were lumps of snow the size of breeze blocks. Daughter wiped out (she's skied all her life and done two seasons, so can ski) and was ok, I wiped out and broke wrist and chipped ulna.
Ultimately my fault as I was skiing on terrain at a speed such that I couldn't stop within visible piste.
Seems to be quite a year for Bashees getting bashed.

I reckon this is a pretty strange request, why doesn't the person who left the bag in Rome just get back on a plane and go get it via Easyjet or similar? Also whey did they leave it? At a time of such high international terrorism threat who is going to pitch up at international security in Rome with a note and take responsibility for collecting a bag for someone they have neither met nor can vouch for the contents? Could contain anything.

No.... they want to know what duty is due. I have $25,000 of kit I take with me to multiple destinations every month. I print a covering letter with the goods and serial numbers then print out the "returned goods form" from HMRC with the same details. I have it stamped leaving the UK and have it stamped on return.
When I get to a destination I declare it with my stamped forms. Shanghai were a bit nervous and didn't know what to do, Korea etc are okay, Japan asked me what it was and when I showed the form and opened the case, they are okay. etc etc etc
Anyone with professional equipment costing a lot of cash should know this. There is another thing called a carne (or is is carniege) that is good to have for the USA.
As the importer, YOU are liable at the point of entry. You,.... not the owner.

But this is coming from an EU country, so there is no duty "importing" to the UK. FWIW I used to work in F1 and we regularly travelled with items worth a LOT of money. Obviously we carried all the relevant import/export documentation when flying long haul and often got delayed in customs, but travelling within the EU was never an issue.

I really don't get this, and it sounds dubious to me. If the "lost property" has been identified ( how did they do this? If it has ID then it's not lost.) All she needs to do is provide the proof of ownership to them. They should then have no issue in releasing the goods and shipping them to the UK at her cost

I lost a video camera in Venice airport and this was sent to lost property. I tracked it down and was able to get FedEx to collect it and ship it to me in the UK. I don't understand the inability to get it shipped although the airport were completely unhelpful as was the airline I had travelled with.

All sorted. Flew out there yesterday morning and just got home. Lovely brief immersion in ancient culture. The bag is bag safe.
Felt a little awkward when I claimed the bag from lost property and was immediately escorted to customs for a thorough bag search. The customs chap clearly realised that the contents were nothing to do with me. (owner 29 year old lady...me old duffer)
Top trip. Got four breaks in left arm/wrist so a freebie 28 hour holiday at the mo is a superb Brucie bonus. Anyone need any international courier work doing?
