Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Do i really need to spend £100+ on a digital etc etc iron or will this £40 holmencol one be ok?

http://www.edgeandwax.co.uk/2348/products/holmenkol_classic_waxer_ski_and_snowboard_wax_iron_uk_eu_230v.aspx

We're planning to go away for a full season so it'll probably get used pretty regularly for a while

thanks, andy

@andymb,
That's the one I've got (also from scottydog). It gets used every week or two and is much better/easier than the old Tesco travel iron wink

unless you are racing I wouldn't bother with a digital one but a proper ski iron is well worth it. the asda 5 quid jobs burn the bases and dont have a thick metal base to heat the p tex up well... Jens one or homenkhol or vola are good choices

Have a look on http://thepisteoffice.com/ Not the cheapest but proper kit that does the job and will last more than a few waxes.

5 quid asda is fine. Any iron will burn bases if too hot. The down side is you have to judge the best temp for you wax as there is no temp numbers.

The upside is they are £5 and you can spend the difference on good file's snowHead

@davkt, @Markymark29, I guess it depends on the skills of the individual.

I've waxed over 100 pairs without incident with my £5 asda iron, so have no reason to think there would be an issue Wink

You can actually get one from Asda for £4 http://direct.asda.com/George-Home-ESI001B-1200W-Steam-Iron/001585218,default,pd.html?cgid=D24M12G01C10

Personally I have one like the Holmenkol linked to in the OP

@andymb, I have used quite a few - and after many years have two irons on the go:

Dakine
https://www.surfdome.com/dakine_snow_tools_-_dakine_adjustable_tuning_iron_-_green-198228?_$ja=tsid:13319%7Ccid:376865232%7Cagid:28531075752%7Ctid:pla-384126455112%7Ccrid:92724946152%7Cnw:g%7Crnd:15529763289867793529%7Cdvc:c%7Cadp:1o1&gclid=CPbL4YvQgswCFQbgGwodm80BBg

and Toko
http://www.blue-tomato.com/en-GB/product/Toko-T8+800W+EU-300749165-yellow/?cr=GBP&_$ja=tsid:46445&adword=Google%2FUK%2FPRODUKTERWEITERUNG%2FToko%2F300749165&gclid=CKCtgK3QgswCFcfgGwodbzsI3w

both have been fine - the Toko is slightly better.

Both are streets ahead of an Asda iron - which I have used in extremis on occasion. The reasons are various but the main thing is the quality of the thermostat and thus the temperature control, which tends to overcool and then spike too high on the cheap non-specialist irons.

30-40gbp may seem a lot but it has really paid off - my toko iron is good as new at 10 years' old.

£40 on something that will last many years is not that much is it? Especially when you're talking about £500+ skis you could seriously damage.

I've got a £30-£40 iron and its serviced tons of sets of skis. Unless you're racing the World Cup scene I think that will serve all of your needs!

I just tried out the Toko (I have the T8 ) for the first time and it's been very decent. It's nice having the heat setting with numbers on (where my normal iron just says "min" and "max"), but also the grooves cut in the surface of the iron making it really easy dropping wax onto the ski, it runs in the grooves and drops onto the ski nice and easy.
