Has anyone had any experience of car hire from Munich Airport? There is a company coming up cheaper than the rest called “buchbinder” but I’ve never heard of them. They are located on the airport too.
Also do all cars in Germany come with winter tyres? Planning on driving up to Mayrhofen from Munich.I assume you can drive across the border in a hire car?
Thanks

We've used Buchbinder (via booking agents like Auto Europe and Holiday Autos) at Munich and (I think) Salzburg too. Never had any problems.
Auto Europe (which also has cashback on Quidco ) generally includes winter tyres in their rates. We've otherwise been charged extra at the various rental desks - or sometimes not been charged extra at all. I'm fairly sure that winter tyres are required by law in Bavaria (though I could be wrong??) so it's fairly certain that the vehicle will have them fitted regardless.
One of the rental firms' more recent money-making extras is to charge extra to drive into other countries (eg Geneva rentals into France and Munich rentals into Austria). It always used to be free but nowadays can cost anything from €10 to €50 per rental. It can be cheapest by notifying the UK booking agent - if using one.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

German hire cars must have winter tyres by law (in the winter months), some places will charge you for them but all will issue you a car fitted with them. As mountainaddict says quite a few firms will charge you for taking the car into Austria. Make sure you buy an Austrian Motorway Vignette at a petrol station near the border to avoid getting fined (you can get ones of a suitable duration for a holiday, i think they do ten day ones)
I've used Buchbinder and got a car that was a bit shonky, it was a not-very-new Dacia that laboured a bit on mountain roads but it was fine. I'd vote for Auto Europe also, always had good service from them and they're pretty cheap.

Was going to book with them a long time ago from Munich but changed my mind as extras were almost doubling the original price and that was not incl extra insurance. Can't remember what extras exactly but I queried the cost via an email and got a stinker of an email back so never looked at them again

@garc, I you can't remember the extras it's not that helpful. I have only ever been charged the Cross border charge, nothing else. If it wasn't insurance what could it have been?
Second driver? Sat nav? Ski rack? Baby seat? Snow chains? Can't think of anything else ...and you get charged for those pretty much anywhere, if you want them. Winter tyres are included

@Ricklovesthepowder, Buchbinder are a perfectly OK company, we use them at work if we need a van or a small truck. For car rental they aim at the "value for money" end of the market dont expect a BMW or similar. On the few occasions I hire a car I want something nice so use Sixt, Avis etc rather than the cheaper options. There used to be a nonsense with winter tyres but now all vehicles have to be supplied with them, dont pay extra for that. The cheaper companies do seem to get away with charging a fee for driving cross border, no reason to do so but it is just another way of keeping the headline cost down. I would make sure you have your own excess insurance, the annual fee is likely to be less than either the cost direct from the hire company or consolidator.

@holidayloverxx, I posted my experience of my dealings with Buchbinder. This is what the poster asked for even if it was from a long time ago so my info was thin. After finding the email I can confirm at the time they were charging a lot extra for winter tyres and also looking for stupid money for childseat. When I emailed them to query they told me if I didn't like the price to go elsewhere. Which I did. Hope this satisfies you

@garc, i don't need to be satisfied. I was just curious. I've never been charged for winter tyres with buchbinder or Megadrive on more than 10 years of regular hires. It seems odd that you were. Car seat charges are indeed ludicrous.

All the (cheaper?) car hire companies charge a x-border fee, and some were dearer (35eu), but the "OK" charge we got was 10eu

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I've used them quite a lot over the last few years and they've been fine. Get third party insurance for excess and you're covered all ways up. Sometimes there are quite long queues at the desk but the queue follows whoever has the cheapest deal.

Thanks guys. I’m going to hang fire with booking anything until the covid and Austria situation becomes clearer

Last time I booked with Buchbinder at Munich I got a brand new 3 litre BMW X3, which got me up to Zurs through heavy snow without needing the chains. So they’re okay for posh cars too.
