Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski touring / Freeride guides Andermatt

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I'm heading to Andermatt for 6 days around Easter and have been looking at the official guide rates.
They're pretty frightening, ~700 CHF for the 5 of us.

All 5 of us are reasonably experienced ski tourers/freeriders so we don't need too much hand holding.

Does anyone have any ideas on cheaper guiding options in the area ?

Rob.

The guided routes there are 'proper' backcountry.... If the weather comes down, you'd _really_ want to know what you're doing.
There are some easy off piste ski routes from the top cable car, where it would be easy to follow tracks.... But I wouldn't do without a guide and I've done them a few times now.
700 chf sounds pretty typical.... The only other option I've done there is with SCGB freshtracks.

700CHF is about right. One of the shops on the main road is cheaper than some of the other options but not by much.

If you have good navigation and avalanche hazard evaluation skills then some of the routes are not difficult. The Felsental and Guspis both have sections that might easily kill you but you can pretty much figure it out if you know what you are doing. I figured them out from the map and then skied them unguided. I did something similar with the easier Giraffe routes.

That said, I had an utter shocker in the Felsental a few weeks ago due to overnight rain and was very glad about the presence of the guide we had hired.

In 2010 we used Heinz Muller-Imholz who was very good and charged 450chf per day. His details can be found on www.4000plus.ch. He lives down the valley from Andermatt and drove up every day to meet us.
