mista, I assume you mean supermarkets butchers etc? I think you'll find the French lunchtime is sacred, also it means many of them are open much later than small shops would be in the UK. I admit it can be frustrating, and not just for food shopping. When we were moving into our apartment last month the DIY stores all closed at 12noon too, so it meant an early trip out every moning, and then going back in the afternoon.

Also found a bakers thats close to the slopes the other day that is closed between 1 and 3.
I understand the french lunchtime thing, but places selling food...

mista, they have to have their lunch too, not that uncommon for the bakeries to be open at 6.30 or 7am though, so I suppose you can't blame them. I suspect the adoption of a 35 hours working week accounts for the continuation of the lunchtime tradition. By the way the bakery in the shopping centre in Briancon stays open, as I got my lunchtime quiche from there.

mista, nor me, but I do admire the European traditions of keeping their lunchtimes, I personally often have to work through mine (you try telling a sick patient that they can't have their prescription cos ths pharmacist is on their luchbreak), it's actually much simpler if the premises actually close.

Or maybe there should be the appropriate number of staff to allow for you to have a break without closing the shop. I've recently quit a job as a chef, needless to say that whilst on dayshifts I generally had to work through my non-existent lunch breaks...

Although not direct, I think there's a link between the rather old fashioned French approach to lunchtime opening and the fact that it's easier to buy first class food products in France than it is here. The French seem to have kept more of their specialised food (and other?) shops than we have, which I envy, although I doubt that lunchtime shutting is directly responsible for that.
UK shops used to close at lunchtime, as well as half day closing on a Wednesday and being shut on Sundays. In Germany it is (or quite recently was) the case that shops had to shut at lunchtime on Saturday, in some areas at least. The less time shops of all sorts are open, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah maybe I should get into gardening and baking and keep a few animals in the fields that way I'll never need to use any shops.

mista, aah, but pharmacists are expensive to employ, compared to a dispensing assistant, and you'd need 2 per shop. Actually more economic to close. It's a legal requirement that there is a pharmacist present when the shop is open.

Just because it is more economical doesn't mean you should forgo your legal entitlements to breaks at work. You should take a leaf out of the French book and form a union, then blockade something or other and throw turnips and tomatos at random disinterested people until it is a legal requirement for all pharmacies to have 2 pharmacists...

I like the lunches/shops shutting in Italy, it is civilised and it forces you to be civilised too and have a proper lunch.....Perhaps its why the Italians have a much lower statistics re: heart attacks and other stress related illensses

I had one driving right up me a$$ on the Col du Petit St. Bernard this summer. (Its a ski run in the winter!)
He looked pretty stressed when I refused to overtake 1/2 a dozen cyclists on a blind switchback.

There is a supermarket in the village here (Serre Che) called 8 till 8. It opens at 9 am closes at 12.30, opens at 16.00 and closes again at 19.00.

Why not push for English Pubs and The Sun printed locally too, then you can have benidorm in the snow

Kruked, there is plenty of English pubs here already and all British newspapers are printed and distributed to all regions in France from Marseilles. There are Heinz products including baked beans, HP sause, pork sausages and plenty of other UK products sold in these supermarket. Obviously there is a demand or they wouldn't supply them.

You miss my point perhaps it was too subtle.
I imagine many here bemoan the lager lout brit abroad mentality yet justify it because there is snow on the ground?

To turn it around, the thing that really p*sses me off is when I go into a (British) pub to get lunch, and get told that they can't serve me because it's one minute past two. (Usually after I've been standing in line to order for 10 minutes.
Less common than it used to be, but still a pain in the butt.

I'm not a chef anymore...
I am now a barman again. I dont like cooking people their lunch whilst I am meant to be snowboarding, especially if it's sheeeite food. I want people to eat out in the evening and to be able to buy themselves food and cook themselves lunch.

Being hungry at lunchtime and not being able to go to the supermarket. My dad runs an organic farm with a shop on it, small scale, he manages not to shut for lunch. The supermarket next door to where I lived in Val D probably has about 40 employes and cant stay open between 1 and 3 in the middle of the day.
Mountain restaurants are for those with more money than sense, not really a big insult if you have loads of money....

The French like to go home and eat a civilised meal at lunchtime. That's the way it is - get over it. Or go home.

Sounds more like your bad time management to me. I've got better things to do than go to the supermarket every lunchtime, once a week is more than enough and I've certainly better things to do at lunchtime like eating lunch for example
