Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

First time driver to Val Thorens

Sorry I have tried searching but can't find an answer

We are driving to Val Thorens on Saturday 2nd April and wondering what route to take. Via michelin states the shortest route to be coming off onto A39 round Dijon then towards Belley on D1504 then towards Chambery. This will obviously be a shorter route but on slower roads.

Or the alternate is around Lyon the onto A43.

I estimate we will hit Lyon on the second route between 3.30 and 5pm (leaving calais at 7 am) driving a motorhome.

So any route recommendations for a motorhome and how to avoid any queues / bad traffic on a Saturday/changeover day??

I know Lyon can get bad at certain times but never been round to the east. Will will hit problems heading up to Val Thorens?

Hi, I have used the Belley - Chambery route on a number of occasions mainly when travelling during February half term, the main reason for using that route is to avoid toll booth problems at peak times It is also a little cheaper, however if the autoroutes are flowing freely it is slower and can feel like it takes forever.

It really comes down to traffic conditions between Chambery and Lyon. I've always used the Dijon, Bourge en Bresse route and choose whether to cut off the Lyon corner depending on conditions.

In a Motorhome I would only use the Belley route out of necessity, unless you like trundling along at 30-40mph.

We will be leaving VT on 2nd April - listen to autoroute traffic reports on 107.7FM which are repeated in English on Saturdays and alter the route depending on traffic at Chambery and the Lyon peage.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks that more or less what I thought! I will monitor the traffic on the day and decide then!

Thanks again
