Hello!
I am very keen on buying the below ski suit - I am absolutely in love with it!
However, it says the waterproof resistance is 2k - is that really bad? what would be the ideal resistance?
I found some other ski suits with 5k resistance - but not sure if that's still not ideal?

@mojitogirl, Im afraid its reasonable to say this suit will offer very little rain protection and to be honest if you get anything more than a dusting of snow - and even then dry, then I'm afraid thats probably going to let in as well!
Now that does not mean you shouldn't buy it, if its what you want go for it but be aware you might want to save it for dry days

I haven't quite recovered from the 2000m freezing level in January when I was rained on constantly for 3 days on the slopes. I immediately switched to Goretex after that (but thankfully got 7 days of constant sunshine on my next trip).

I personally wouldn't buy less than 20K but I'm mentally scarred from sitting on saturated slow chairlifts in the driving rain

My 10k jacket is fine for almost any conditions apart from torrential rain. I would think 2k would be ok for a light shower and moderate amounts of normal snow, but anything more and you'll suffer. For £300 you can buy some decent gear...

Seriously why would a woman wear a onesie for any other reason than a bit of a laugh? Think of the act of contortion you'll have to do when you want a wazz. Also if you're new to skiing, do you really want/need to spend £300 on ski clothing? There's plenty of better value, more practical ski wear out there.

There are lots of end of season bargains on big brands so keep searching. £300 for something that is little more water resistant than a wooly pulley is a rip off. I got my wife some very nice Columbia gear for around £180.

The rating figure, eg '5000', relates to the weight of water per unit area the fabric will keep out. In the '5k' example, if you stretched the fabric over say, a bucket; then put a pipe on it, you could fill the pipe up to a height of 5m before it would leak.

Agreed, onesie for retro day, real skiwear for actual skiing. If you really want a onesie mohitogirl then eBay would be better value, but note most folks wont be wearing one everyday, just as a joke now and then (very old locals excepted). Jess

My brother in law wore his retro onesie on our last trip.
He'd bought it in the early 90's after his first ski holiday and never used it. Fast forwards past family, mortgage etc and he declared his intention to actually use the thing. We chuckled and disbelieved.
Things to note - it still fitted. It raised not one eyebrow or comment from other skiers. It was completely un-waterproof, to the point of being a problem even during a week of good weather.

For me it's not about fancy dress, it's about looking good / distinctive.
Though when I went skiing a few weeks ago quite a few people were on ski suits every day

I think I'll opt for something like the below from
Super dry but annoying they don't have any details about breathability & water resistance - are they generally a good brand for ski gear?

Mojitogirl: the one in the link will be ok in anything other than persistent rain. See my post above. Picture a six foot six tall glass of water standing on the fabric- you should stay dry.

That one looks like it might be quite a warm jacket, which may not be ideal for spring skiing.

If it doesn't say how waterproof and/or breathable it probably means it is neither. As had already been said there is a stack of good stuff with good waterproof levels and breathability. If you go purely on looks then I think you will eventually be disappointed when you are soaked through and freezing cold. Style over function in a mountain environment is not to be recommended.

That's a cheap down jacket - I'm not necessarily talking price there, it's the materials and construction. Firstly the down might well have been ripped from a still living bird in China/Hungary. Secondly the outer is unlikely to be very water resistant - they never are on cheap down jackets because the down absorbs a lot of moisture and needs to breathe or it gets clumpy. They are alright for skiing on cold dry days but but either too hot or just plain inadequate on wet and windy days. I've got an 850 fill waterproof down jacket with ripstop pertex outer and it still gets clammy. You are much better off with a quality shell and layering.

The other thing to remember with colouring with low or lowish waterproof ratings is that they're usually on the cheaper end of the scale. This is then echoed in their build quality.
Clothing like this will most likely suffer the most at the seams - they won't be taped or bonded in any decent way and will allow water through under most circumstances.
It's worth paying a little bit more.

No sweetheart, you'll not get wet. Just buy it and enjoy it. One piece suits are still beyond exceptional. I hope they make a comeback.................

That jacket describes itself as water resistant- that equates to "sponge" in my mind. Avoid.

I can't imagine anyone with the slightest notion about technical skiwear buying Superdry where at least £100 of the ticket price is going toward overinflated "brand". Just but some lairy Noronna like everyone else out there if you want to look like you know what you're doing and want good kit.

@Dave of the Marmottes, In Champoluc at the weekend just about everyone in kit that had been bought in the last two years was wearing Norrona. A splendid achievement from their marketing department (not that it's not good kit).
