Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Yep, we saw the grisly scenes from the Birgitzerkopfl chair as helicopters hovered overhead. Had to explain to my 6 year old what was happening. Grim, senseless day.

Can't get the translation were they consciously traversing below the barriers - looks a fairly steep slope at 35 deg?

@Dave of the Marmottes, new update from the Lawinnenwarndiesnt here: http://lawinenwarndienst.blogspot.co.at

One group skied under the barriers and into the chute. Two others who had skinned (rather than traversed, as I understand it) over/past the barriers from the chairlift (lookers left) skied down and triggered a 40m wide slab that ran 300m into the chute /tracks in red), where it hit the other group and buried two people.

It's really hard for to understand how this was able to happen without someone thinking "hang on, this isn't a great idea.'

- It was the morning after heavy snow and 90km/h winds
- The resort had been shut the day before due to winds - even the funicular train thing
- A road had been closed in the area (to Stubaier Glacier) due to a big avalanche hitting it a few hours previously
- It's a steep slope, around 35° (above report says over 40°, they should know better than me, but I've never thought it was that steep)
- It's a KNOWN avalanche slope - LOTS of avalanche barriers at the top of it, and HUGE earthworks at the bottom to direct slides away form infrastructure. Impossible to miss!
- Avalanche report was a high 3, specifically warning about wind slabs

There is some safe skiing to the left of the photos, and left of the chute. However I can't imagine how anyone could have thought skiing into the chute was anything other than incredibly dangerous.

EDIT: Not sure why that image won't embed?

@clarky999, if that is the gully I think it is, it avalanched down onto the nursery slopes sometime back in the late 70s perhaps early 80s, wiping out the hut that Hourmont School Travel (as they were called back then, now possibly Ski Total?) used for having lunches for their school groups. I can't remember the exact details, but it was a massive slide, right across the nursery area (as it was back then) and the end Schuß of the Damen-Abfahrt.

A friend of mine had his season card taken away for riding there with his school mates about 20 years ago. This area of Lizum is very much one to avoid and has been for a long time.

@Samerberg Sue, yep that's the one - and you can't miss the earthworks built because of that slide!

Thoughts go out to the victim (and the people who triggered the slide!), but I can't help but feel how avoidable this was.

Update

http://tirol.orf.at/news/stories/2761876/

The Police now say it was unlikely the the actual Ski Group caused the Avalanche. they found two ski tracks higher but cannot be sure if that triggered .
There was a group of 18 skitourers in the area who they will question.

Maybe he thought he would have more chance of digging his poles in and staying put rather than being knocked off his feet and over the edge of the piste or something?

I am now the owner of a pair of shark mitts. Arrived today snowHead

@stanton, yep, that's what the Lawinenwarndienst said too: http://lawinenwarndienst.blogspot.co.at

They still skied into one of the most dangerous parts of the whole slope before getting hit though.

Hehe, this was me, and they are my shark mitts - It was definitely scary, but as you see in the video, It looked a lot worse to begin with, and soon eased off. The guy in the orange trousers was a pal of mine who was just visiting, I think he was a bit stunned to be honest ! In hindsight throwing myself off the edge of the piste probably didn't help lol, but when something like that is happening above you sense kinda goes out the window!!

@ceedeebee, re going off the edge probably made sense for you not to be 'trapped' between the wall on your right and the piste. Did that run many times last year, when there was nothing like the amount of snow now. From your vid it does look like quite a vertical build-up of snow on the wall to your right.

Glad it was only a mini-Avalanche and that you got out ok snowHead
