Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Gressoney/La Thuile?

Off to Gressoney for the first time on 29th Jan. I notice in the skipass blurb that it
also covers La Thuile. This is a resort we skied 4yrs on the bounce several years ago,
before everyone else found our how good it was. Can anyone tell me if it is easy to get from G to LT by taxi/bus and what the approx time and cost would be? Would love to
know what LT is like nowadays. Same applies for Pila pretty please.

by public transport it's a hike . Bus down to pont de thingy, train/bus to Aosta and bus up to La Tuile. Probably not worth it. Driving yourself is probably an hour and a half from the topmost Gressony village. (but that's a bit of a guess).

Gressony/Champoluc has quite a lot a skiing (lots of it very scenic with some lovely long runs), so you might not find the need for a day trip. If you do, and La Tuile seems a long way, there are lots of others along the Aosta valley which you would come to first (Pila, Courmayour etc) which would be good for a day.

Simon, I've only been to Gressoney (which was great) and would agree with pendodave about connecting - it would be difficult by public transport. Hope there's lots of snow to keep you busy there. There are impressive very accessible, mountain huts (substantial buildings) high up above Gressoney if you're looking for something novel for an overnight stay, and an amazing morning!

I did a Phil Smith course in Gressoney a few years ago when there was very little snow there so we bussed to La Thuile and Cervinia a few days. It took some way past 1 hour on a charter bus going direct from one to the other. I didnt see many taxis in Gressoney, in fact I didnt see any ! Public bus would likely be a nightmare. The journey itself is not too bad, back down from Gressoney to the motorway, along a bit then up to La Thuile but I imagine trying to coordinate all that on public transport would be a real pain

Thanks for the info everyone. Looks like I will be staying put! I like the idea of a mountain hut, I'll have to
try and convince my family though. I can see the horror on their faces now,"what no ensuite!".

Just got back from Andermatt and the guides from Monterosa were holed out in Andematt as there was so little snow. 3 hrs by car. If MR has snow then I wouldn't bother thinking about La Thuile, too far IMV.

Simon,

Last tuesday I met guides I knew, from Alagne, in Andermatt. They had driven 3 hrs from that valley and were staying 4 days to escort their clients around Andermatt as they said there was no snow in Monterosa. The snow in Andermatt wasn't great but they obviously thought it worth it. It did however dump in central Switzerland that wednesday. Whether Monterosa had snow as well, I am not too sure. The guides have always told me that the weather comes up from the Med to feed the Monterosa region, including Cervinia. I did notice rain clouds in the bay of Genoa on their weather forecast but I don't have an upto date report apart from what they told me almost a week ago.... sorry..
