Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Rossignol Soul 7 Skins for Salomon Rocker 2?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Dear Snowheads,

I have done a fair about of skinning and day tours, but I have never owned my own touring/sidecountry setup until now. I have always rented touring kit as required.

I now have a pair of Salomon Rocker2s 115 in 188cm length (with touring bindings) and was wondering if a pair of Rossignol Soul 7 188cm Skins would be any good for my skis. They are pre cut to fit a ski of dimensions 137-108-127 and my skis are 139-115-131. I want to avoid cutting to size and making up the skins if I can!

I will only be doing a few hours of touring per-day, as dictated by the conditions and mountain guides. I want a low faff skins system that I can take with me and use it if I need to. I understand that I may need glue and other bits and bobs please advise.

Thank you for your help.

@JayDub,
Why were you thinking of using the Soul 7 skins?
Have you found a pair cheap?
If they are factory cut they shouldnt be more 10-12 MM. smaller under foot which is at most 6mm each side.
You might feel this is too much but only if you are steep verting ice. In reality it don't mean a thing if you are pushing up on rocker 2's you are clearly out for pow, just remember keep your weight over your feet.

@Super Steezy,

140 Euros at Sport Conrad which seems pretty good. I doubt if I will be going up steep ice. Thanks for the advice.

@JayDub, buy bigger ones and get the shop to cut them for you if you're not comfortable...
I thought I could get away with 102mm skins on my Atomic Automatics (117mm), only 7 or 8mm each side,
Oh dear......
On the hard snow we were climbing, I found I could only go straight up and that was having to be certain the skis were absolutely flat on the hardpack, if I tried to traverse, the edges would lift the skins off and game over....
Black diamond skins are ~€140 for 125mm and easy to cut and use Very Happy

Sport Conrad have suitable trim to fit skins for only another 9.95 eur (K2), or if you're going to be doing a lot of skinning, have a look at the Colltex skins with the very easy whizz adhesive - Jon stocks those too.

@spyderjon,

Would you recommend the Coltex kits instead then cut them to size.

@JayDub, seconded the recommendation for getting skins cut to fit: BD mohair mix are about the same price on Sport Conrad as you were quoting for pre-cuts, if price is important. Cutting them to fit is straightforward just need to take your time. If they're too narrow, you'll have very little grip the minute you hit a hard traverse.

@Sharkymark,

Forgive my ignorance. I presume I will need to buy glue, some foil/mesh, a bag and some treatment for the skins - or do they come prepared the first time with foil/mesh in a bag? I am completely new to preparing my own skins. I am used to having a nice little blue bag handed to me with everything sorted. So what do I need to get folks? Thanks.

@JayDub, When you purchase a skin kit there's everything in there you'll require: the skins (which already have the glue applied with a protective film on top), tip bails/loops, tail clips, cheat sheets (some skins don't need them), a cutter & instructions. And everything is in the carry bag.

Depending upon the make either the tip bail or the tail clip is usually already attached (or sometimes neither) and you attach the other after cutting the skin to length.

Colltex, the make I stock, have a YouTube channel with a series of excellent videos on their fitting, use & maintenance. I've not checked but I'd assume that other brands have something similar.

I offer a fitting service but only for skins I supply.

Point taken about the traverses @Sharkymark.

How long does the glue usually last? Will they need re-gluing if I use them half a dozen times in Easter and then do not ski again until Christmas or February? Is there a re-gluing service in the UK or in resorts? Any websites you could point me in the direction of? Top tips please.

@JayDub, wot @spyderjon said Very Happy It's easy to do - I was surprised what you can get skins for now too: I'm sure they used to be more expensive. My colltex skins are 4 seasons old and the glue needed a refresh last year.

So thanks for the advice all. Now what skin kit and where from?

Is it worth getting the 'Carlos Fandango' Coltex Kit from The Pisteoffice, or any other suggestions. I will just being some occasional stuff but I want a decent system. Ta
