 Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi
I'm due to go to Plan de Corones-Kronplatz in Italy next month with some friends. As I'm a qualified BASI Level 2 ski instructor (with valid/current membership), they've asked if I can give them lessons.
I've been trying to find out whether this is legal or not and have heard it is different depending on the region you're going to. I can't find any contact details for the local Collegio Regionale and as it's not formal teaching and I'm not being paid, I wasn't sure if I even need any special permissions.
I also can't work out if I need any kind of specialist travel insurance.
Any snow heads got any information for me? Or can point me to where I find this out?
I've asked BASI but haven't had a response as yet.
Thanks

 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

You are skiing with friends and family - you do as you please.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@gracesnow, just like any family or friend. BUT if it looks quite formal, and you are challenged (which is possible) for goodness' sake don't mention any qualifications. Just say you're the best skier in the group so you're helping the others.

No problem at all - you're not being paid so why would there be a problem! In addition to which you are qualified to an appropriate level. They'd struggle to give you a hard time, in addition to which it's not worth their time.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Hmm. Bit of a can of worms. I'd not mention any qualification.

Well assuming that you're not taking people off piste, that is an appropriate level. If you went around fully suited and booted in a ski instructors overalls, you'd be naive think you'd not get stopped, but in this case where it's a week away with family and friends, why would you be any different to any other member of the public only with more experience? Whatever the french say, level 2 is an internationally recognised (apart from in France!) level and Gracesnow would be well within her rights to get a job at an italian ski school. Whether she'd get one is a different question, but that's not what we're talking about here... she's not getting paid. The Dolomites is massively more relaxed about this sort of thing than France - for example you regularly see ski hosts here and it's recognised that it's part and parcel of what pays the bills for restaurants, the lifts etc... yes if they chose to they could get stroppy, but they don't...

that's the key point. No different from any other group of family and friends.
There were a fair few reports of problems in the Dolomites a while ago but perhaps things have calmed down now.
