Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

UCPA Tignes

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Im looking at booking my first solo week in Tignes with UCPA,

I was wondering If anyone has any experience of this, what is the percentage of English speaking individuals as Im aware its a french company? Is it filled with mainly individuals or groups?

Also when it comes to transfers does anyone have a reliable company they use form Geneva Airport?
Im waiting on a reply of the exact location of the UCPA lodge to sort transfer!

Expect something like 30% English, 30% French, then a mix of pretty much every other country in Europe.

Don't UCPA do transfers? If so I'd use those, esp for solo trip, will probably be cheaper and they will know where UCPA is (some of the centres are in weird places a fair distance from normal stops or big hotels/chalets)

My experience of UCPA is that it is one of the best ways to do solo trips, right after a Snowheads bash, and if you are 20-something probably the most fun for dirt cheap that you will have skiing.

I would sign up for lessons, consider doing full time if solo, the additional cost is tiny for the amount of tuition, and while groups can be quite large and tuition unlikely to be very focused coaching it does mean you will meet a load of other people and have ski buddies throughout if you want them.

Plenty of English speakers, so don't worry about that. Last year when I went to UCPA Les Arcs there were a lot of Swedish and they all speak English. If you take part in classes or a group you will be put in a English speaking one.

As far as I know they don't do transfers.

I had a good time. You will have fun.

Hi @jason123, welcome to Snowheads Smile

They don't do transfers themselves, but they do them in conjunction with a company called Loyet (they also go under the name of Simply Transfers).

My experience of Loyet was very good. They are very competitive on price too.

@jason123, while UCPA is a French company, they have an agent here in the U.K, a company called Action Outdoors.
If you book through them, there's an option to book your transfer (with Loyet) at the same time.

Enjoy your skiing! snowHead

@jason123, if you do a search for UCPA on here with Scampi Dellahanti as the author in title and message you should find some info along with a code for £10 discount

Neither year I have been have I had an English speaking class. Both times the tuition was in french (and mostly the people in the class conversed in french only), and this year the teacher could not even speak english (though the second day we did get a translator provided, he only translated a subset of what the teacher was saying).

The UCPA in Tignes is on the main road in Val Claret, it is marked on Google maps, it is on the route of the free local buses if a transfer drops you elsewhere in Tignes.

In Chamonix last week it was about 40-50% Swedish, 25% French and a mixture of people from all over the show. The French largely kept to themselves but everyone else socialised together with English as the lingua franca. My room was all single travelers who got on great and despite being a bit nervous about going alone it turned into the funnest of holidays.

Although the instructor spoke very little English I was lucky to have a Swede and an Austrian in the group who spoke French and were happy to translate(tbh I wasn't too bothered as was more interested in the safe off-piste guiding buy a local who knows the area). One other tip would be to take earplugs unless you're the sort of person who can sleep through WW3 Very Happy
