Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tree well rescue

I find a couple of things a bit odd here:
1) The lad's ability seems very stretched in the terrain
2) The lack of a massive hug after he pulled him out

How long do you reckon the kid would have lasted had Dad been in front and had to back track? Was he in a non dangerous and just frightening position?

It didn't look hugely dangerous to me. At 1:50 you can see he's hardly buried - he's not actually in the well as much as across it. The fact that there's a tree (and maybe a well) there is not hugely important: he fell on his face, which would hurt anywhere. Even then, the old guy can get into him *from above* without kicking snow onto him: don't try that on your average tree well rescue. I'd say he was at greater risk from crashing into something hard than NARSID.

I guess you'd not take a beginner there in the first place. The dad guy was pretty close and clearly watching, and the snow looked firm, so he could have boot-packed back up if he needed to. If the kid had been really in, he may not have had the voice signal. Chances are they didn't have transceivers, and with all those tracks working out where he went could be a challenge.

My view (shared by at least one BC judge) is that if you're in the trees then you need to take care of yourself. It looked like that kid was barely able to do that. I guess they learned that lesson. Of course you could flip it around and put the dad in a tree well: I think he needs a bigger/ better buddy.
