As part of its Hahnenkamm racing celebrations this week, Kitzbuhel will honour the first-ever - British - winner of the downhill: Gordon 'Mouse' Cleaver, who won the race 75 years ago. Cleaver was an Old Harrovian who went on to become a highly-decorated fighter pilot in the Second World War.
The Kitzbuhel Ski Club, which set up the Hahnenkamm, will present a Cleaver Cup at this year's contest, which begins tomorrow, to the highest placed British competitor.

Yes! I was wondering if he was in any way related to (Ian?) Cleaver who ran - perhaps continues to run - the Grands Montets lift system at Argentiere?

richmond, But it's not just to do with ski racing is it? It's pioneers. How many Brit ski tourist know we invented the sport? How many know about Arnold Lunn? How many know about the origins of the Kandarhar race? Brits in bar where I watched Alain Baxter win our first ever alpine medal - were they interested? NO - so what attitude. Brits just don't care!!! Bah !!!! rant over.
