First Pair of Boots

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Okay so I am going to take the plunge and buy my first pair of boots, after being uncomfortable in the 3/4 pairs of boots I have rented.

So far I have spent around 7 hours in 4 different shops trying on around 20 pairs of boots in various sizes. there is a clear winner in comfort and fit for me, not so much for looks that match my outerwear tho.
The Salomon Launch 15/16 Snowboard Boots are the best fitting boot i have tried, the straight jacket reducing heel lift fixes the problems i was having with pain from over tightening and the laces should also help.

However I am looking for some advice, what's the general consensus on this boot? any quality issues? honestly I would prefer a slightly stiffer boot, but the next one up in the Solomon range (Best fitting manufacturer for me) felt a little painful around the outside of my foot after 10 minutes.

My questions center around how much roomier will the boots be after heat moulding and a few trips in them? could this make more room in the stiffer boots and so a better choice? Or if the boots fit perfect now does this mean they will become loose?

Any help is much appreciated! thanks!

Hey, can't comment on those exact boots but I have recently bought the girls salomon moxies. I also tried on the ivy which I suspect is the equivalent to the men's launch. The ivy felt slightly more comfortable in the shop but way too soft so I went for the stiffer boot. I'm really not a fan of heat moulding but I find that just wearing them round the house for a couple of weeks moulds them brilliantly. Had a week on the mountain in them so far and so far they're the best boots I've ever had. Very Happy

I did have my old boots heat moulded and I found that they packed out pretty quickly. They did get a bit loose so I tended to overtighten them and then get really numb and painful feet. I still got about 9 weeks riding out of them plus dome trips etc so not a total disaster!

Hope that helps and doesn't just confuse the issue even more! Very Happy Puzzled snowHead

Thanks for your reply, went into the shop again today and tried on the Dialogue (stiffer boot) seemed to be okay this time round. Think I just needed to find what tightness on the laces worked best.

Looking to go for the Dialogue as they had a great fit, were a good stiffness and felt like after wearing them in would be a nice choice.

We will see tho! Might see if i can find any other boots/ manufacturers i have missed

The Dialogue is a good boot, I've had mine for a few years and they've holding up well. It's not a stiff boot though so the Launch must be super soft! I didn't bother with heat moulding but did swap the stock footbeds for Superfeet for a bit of extra arch support.

Bought the Salomon Launch BOA a couple of weeks ago and used them last week. I generally have trouble with heel lift but the Straight Jacket system sorted that out and these were great. I used thin socks for the first few days and then thicker ones end of the week as they slackened off a bit but the BOA and SJ means you don't really have a problem.
Got them from Ekosport for £99 so an absolute bargain in my view.

Looked all over a number of different sites as i wanted them in black and brown.
Luckily none had my size for any cheaper than the shop i had been going in to try on.

I say luckily as i decided to drop down half a size as insoles helped hold my foot back in the boot and meant i didn't need a larger size.

bit sad i missed out on saving £40 from snowwinn, but size does matter

Can't comment on the Salomon specifically, but if there is a BOA option available, I'd seriously look at it.

I don't know if it helps but salomon doesn't do true half sizes (like many other brands) although burton does and 32 does some boot models, not all.
You are purchasing 25 26 27 28 29 cm shell size only in salomon .
The insole on the so called and numbered .5cm half sizes will be a thinner insole only giving a little more volume but no change in length at all.

In say a 28cm and 28.5cm size boot for example both are exactly the same boot length .
Anyone can adjust boot volume with insole thickness .

This applies too the range previously called authentic with removable liners so I would imagine salomon is still doing this sizing which in boot terms is called 2;1 or 1;2 lasting I believe .
Where burtons would be true half sizes or 1:1 lasted boots .
If this isn't correct I would happily want too be updated but its how I understand its been for well over a decade .

Insoles help with so much in regard to bootfit especially if you ride a lot or have had feet/boot issues previously although they don't fix everything as some sales may claim .
They can possibly shorten or stop foot spread to a degree so if on the cusp of shell sizes you never know you might be able to drop a shell size .
Personally I found this possible with boot cm numbers shorter than my feet cm numbers but only if my lower legs were fit with flexibility being the most important .

I went for the Dialogues with the fast lacing. Wasn't too keen on the Boa as I always seemed to over tighten them and not be great at telling visually if they were tight/loose.

Ended up with a size 10, currently wearing them around the house and trying to wear them in after having them heat molded. No issues so far Smile
