Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@BobinCH, opened in Photoshop. Image>auto tone and then Image>auto colour

Then a little judicial photo tweaking after

Most Photoshop knock-offs will have something similar

The snow is brighter than your camera thinks it is. It's best if you compensate for that in the camera, or you lose dynamic range and detail in your photographs. Set the camera's exposure compensation to +2/3 or +1 for snow. You can improve it in "post production", but you can't get back what you don't capture.

Download GIMP for the PC or Mac and use the photoshop skin. Or if it is still available, Pixel32 from Pavel K is basically a photoshop clone.

Auto contrast is simple one button fix.

I just use iPhoto and the autocorrect usually just makes things worse....

Yep, Gimp is a good alternative. Once you've got past the sniggering

I think the problem is that all auto exposure systems add up all the light readings coming through the lens and make the assumption that the end result should be neutral. I.e. Add up all the light bits, deduct all the dark bits and the result should be 'zero'. Some scenes aren't like that. Snow scenes and beach scenes come out underexposed and if you try taking pics of the night sky it will probably be murky grey and overexposed. As@philwig, says, you need to give it a couple of stops more exposure. Not sure how easy it is to do this on an iPhone, when on the move, but you can download apps that can do this. You can try and rectify this afterwards in Gimp if PS, but it will never be anything like as good.

This. The Exif suggests that's a real camera so it's settable. The thing is that most of the data is in the higher levels (it's not linear), so chucking that away makes the pictures look... well, not as good as they otherwise would.
