Can anybody recommend a resort in Italy that is not too big and a 'real' place with Alpine charm?
We've got one intermediate skier and one non-skier who needs something else to do all day!
Thanks,
Ralph

Can I suggest a resort called Pila, which is reacheable by cable-car from a market town called Aosta which is a very pretty Roman built proper town. I am told that the snow cover is almost always - north facing pistes and high - very good in Pila. For the non-skier there is lots to see and do in Aosta.
I know taht Interski goes there and I think that Crystal also.
Have a look here pila, aosta valley

rjmusto, do a search on here for more info. Courmayeur is too small really for a week but has good connections with Chamonix and a coupleof other resorts via a bus ride. 3-4 days is best for Courmayeur.

Thanks for that.
And ok on Courmayeur thoughts.....

rjmusto, Aosta, it's a proper town not just a ski resort and you can ski Pila directly from Aosta. With a car you also have access to Courmyer and La Thuile, actually you don't even need a car, there's a bus service to the ski stations in the Aosta valley.

Thanks for the suggestions folks.
Like the look of Pila and of Champoluc.
Anyone got views on snow reliability for these two?

Hello,
My girlfriend and I are thinking about a four day trip to go skiing in the beg of March.
Due to a little time press it would be nice to enter mountains by rental car from Milano, Venize, Geneva or Münich
How many hours to drive to Pila from Milano / Geneva ?
How many hours to drive to Ischgl from Münic?
Anyone care to share a little experience on nice BB , car hire and such?
Regards,
Jan

You know it makes sense.

rjmusto, champoluc snow not great at present (wrong weather pattern) but lots of man made stuff. Pila is in similar shape.
Champoluc is small, very friendly but I'm not sure what one would do if not skiing...There's a small ice rink but not a great deal else...

If in the Aosta valley, the Pila/Aosta combination is far more likely to appeal to the non-skiers. The villages of Champoluc and Gressony, while small and attractive are a long way on a bus from anywhere interesting.
As well as the interest in Aosta itself, it's on a railway line back down the valley which allows non-skiers to visit other towns all the way along as far as Turin (which I think you could do in a well organised day trip if sufficiently motivated !). Italian trains are so cheap you keep wondering if they've given you the right ticket !

For something completely different, why not try somewhere in the Central Apennines? Accessible within 1.5 hours from Rome and they've had miles more snow than the Italian Alps this year. You could stay somewhere like Aquila which is a proper old Italian town and a very attractive place and drive out to the nearby resorts.
